Four-dimensional data-assimilation methods, along with the most commonly used objective analysis and initialization techniques, are examined from a historical perspective. Operational techniques, including intermittent data assimilation and Newtonian nudging, and next-generation methods (Kalman-Bucy filtering and the adjoint method) are briefly described. Several methods are compared, with primary emphasis being placed on recent papers dealing with the operational assimilation techniques. Ongoing and future research is outlined, and some important implications of this research are discussed.

Non-linear normal mode initialization (NNMI) proposed by Machenhauer (1977) is applied to the JMA spectral limited area models. The normal modes of the models are constructed using a constant map factor and Coriolis parameter, which was first performed by Briere (1982) for a grid model. The initialization procedure is carried out in spectral space. The NNMI is designed to preserve the prescribed boundary conditions of the model. By introducing a cut-off period, gravity waves with very low frequency are excluded from the procedure.The initialization using the adiabatic time tendencies successfully reduced the large time tendencies of the gravity wave modes of the first five vertical modes. The changes of the initial states by the NNMI with a short cut-off period of 6 hours were very small, while the NNMI with a longer cut-off period produced larger initial changes in the baroclinic zone. The NNMI eliminated high frequency oscillations in the subsequent forecast.

Cet article est issu d'un exposé général sur les expériences étrangères en "modélisation à domaine limité", présenté lors de l'atelier tenu sur ce sujet à Météo-France à Boulogne, en mars 1991. Après avoir introduit la terminologie et la technique utilisées, il présente les principaux groupes actifs dans la modélisation numérique à échelle fine (ou à domaine limité). Mais il discute aussi des aspects qui concernent le système de prévision audelà du modèle numérique, à savoir les comparaisons et les vérifications de ces modèles, l'assimilation des données à cette échelle, la prévision des situations exceptionnelles et les paramétrisations physiques. Par ailleurs cetarticle garde en ligne de mire le système de prévision numérique Péridot qui peut servir de point de repère sur ces divers aspects. ABSTRACTThis paper reviews the limited-area or fine-mesh Numerical Weather Prédiction (NWP). The main groups involved in this fîeld are presented through their main ideas and activities. That concerns the Penn-State NCAR limited-area modeling, the spectral limited-area modeling operational at the Japan Meteorological Agency (applied in particular for cyclone prédiction) and the European developments inside the European Working Group on Limited-Area Model (Ewglam), including also Hirlam activities from Nordic countries. AH thèse groups and their results are reviewed, keeping in mind the research and development done in the frame of the French NWP model Péridot. Auxiliary topics like fine-mesh analysis, parameterization at this scale, intercomparisons and vérifications of thèse models, and finally severe weather prédiction are also discussed.
