The width design of protective pillars is an important factor affecting the stability of high-stress roadways. In this study, a novel numerical modeling approach was developed to investigate the relationship between protective pillar width and roadway stability. With the 20 m protective pillar width adopted in the field test, large deformation of roadways and serious damage to surrounding rocks occurred. According to the case study at the Wangzhuang coal mine in China, the stress changes and energy density distribution characteristics in protective pillars with various widths were analysed by numerical simulation. The modeling results indicate that, with a 20 m wide protective pillar, the peak vertical stress and energy density in the pillar are 18.5 MPa and 563.7 kJ/m3, respectively. The phenomena of stress concentration and energy accumulation were clearly observed in the simulation results, and the roadway is in a state of high stress. Under the condition of a 10 m wide protective pillar, the peak vertical stress and energy density are shifted from the pillar to roadway virgin coal region, with peak values of 9.5 MPa and 208.3 kJ/m3, respectively. The decrease in vertical stress and energy density improves the stability of the protective pillar, resulting in the roadway being in a state of low stress. Field monitoring suggested that the proposed 10 m protective pillar width can effectively control the large deformation of the surrounding rock and reduce coal bump risk. The novel numerical modeling approach and design principle of protective pillars presented in this paper can provide useful references for application in similar coal mines.

Coal mine rockburst is closely related to the complex geological structure. Understanding the criterion of the fault activation instability and the disaster-causing mechanism of rockburst under the influence of mining is the theoretical premise and important guarantee of safe and efficient coal mining. In this paper, based on the theory of key stratum, the mechanical model of fault slip instability in the normal fault during the hanging wall mining was established, and the instability criterion was derived. It is concluded that the fault slip instability of the hanging wall is mainly controlled by two factors: (1) the distance between coal seams and key stratum and (2) the distance between working face and fault. Moreover, these two factors have an inverse relation to the occurrence of rockburst. Subsequently, three conceptual models of rockburst induced by the fault stress transfer, stress concentration of coal pillars, and fault structural instability were proposed. Based on the rock mechanics theory, the rockburst carrier system model of “roof-coal seam-floor” near the fault was established. The mechanical essence of fault rockburst was obtained as follows: under the action of fault, the static load of fault coal pillar was increased and superimposed with the fault activation dynamic load, leading to high-strength rockburst disaster. Based on the occurrence mechanism of fault rockburst, the monitoring and prevention concept and technical measures were proposed in three aspects, including the monitoring and control of fault activation dynamic loads, the monitoring of high static load in fault coal pillar and stress release, and the strengthening roadway support. These prevention and control measures were verified in the panel 103down02 of the Baodian Coal Mine in engineering, and the effectiveness of these measures was proved.

The infiltration and physical and chemical effects of fissure water often have a degrading effect on the strength and bearing capacity of the surrounding rock of the roadway. With the increase of the time of water infiltration, the roadway deformation increases exponentially, resulting in a higher risk of roadway destruction. In this paper, targeting at the supporting and protection issues associated with the main inclined shaft during the water-drenching, a numerical simulation method was established to evaluate the impact of the fissure water on the deformation of the surrounding rock of the roadway, and a solution to control the top water in main inclined shafts by grouting was proposed. Through the numerical simulation method, the effective penetration range of the slurry in the surrounding rock and the variation of the tunnel deformation with the grouting timing were studied. A method of combining numerical simulation with on-site monitoring to determine a reasonable grouting timing was proposed. The field application suggests that grouting at a reasonable timing can effectively control the influence of seepage water from the roof crack of the main inclined shaft on the deformation of the roadway surrounding rock, improve the integrity of the roadway surrounding rock, increase the bearing capacity of the support, and maintain the safety and stability of the roadway surrounding rock of the main inclined shaft. Furthermore, this study can provide insightful references to the grouting reinforcement adopted by similar main inclined shafts.
