Objective: To understand the meanings for the process of living, for patients undergoing myocardial revascularization surgery, and to construct an explanatory theoretical model. Method: Grounded Theory was used, with data collection undertaken between October 2010 and May 2012, in a health institution which specializes in cardiac surgery, located in the south of Brazil. Thirty-three subjects were interviewed (patients, health care professionals and family members), distributed in four sample groups. Result: The explanatory theoretical model was comprised of 11 categories and the central phenomenon. The specialized service and the cardiac rehabilitation program formed the context, the discovery of the cardiac disease and the feelings experienced during the perioperative period were the cause and intervening conditions in the process of experiencing the myocardial revascularization surgery. The strategies were relying on the family's support, having faith and hope, and participating in the rehabilitation program. This process's main consequences were the confrontation of the changes and the resulting limitations, difficulties and adaptations to the new lifestyle after surgery. Conclusion: The process of experiencing the myocardial revascularization surgery constitutes an opportunity for maintaining the patient's life associated with the needs for confronting the significant changes in lifestyle.

Objective: Educational nursing intervention is a strategy that can be useful for changing behaviours in a person’s health. Hospitalisation for coronary surgery is a valuable opportunity for the nurse to implement the knowledge which aims to promote healthy behaviours and secondarily, prevent coronary and cardiovascular disease, as these continue to be the main causes of death worldwide. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of educational nursing intervention in the promotion of a healthy diet and in the anthropometric values (body mass index and waist perimeter) of people who have undergone coronary surgery.Methods: A quantitative and quasi-experimental study was conducted on a control group (20 participants in each group). The experimental group was submitted to a personalised structured educational intervention during hospitalisation, in the nursing follow-up visit (two to three weeks after surgery) and over the phone (two months after surgery). Each group went through two evaluations: the first before the surgery, and the second three months after the surgery. The instruments used to collect data included: the sociodemographic and clinical characterisation questionnaire and the Eating Habits Scale. Non-parametric tests were used.Results: The findings showed that 77.5% of the participants were male and 22.5% female. The participants’ average age was 67.35 ± 8.151. Results showed a significant improvement in the eating habits of both groups, with higher relevance in the experimental group and a reduction of the body mass index and waist perimeter exclusively in the experimental group.Conclusions: Regarding people who have undergone coronary surgery, personalised structured educational nursing intervention is a useful tool in obtaining health benefits and in secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. More extensive and comprehensive studies are recommended to verify the results and enhance their success.

Estudo descritivo, qualitativo, com objetivo de identificar e analisar, sob a ótica de pacientes submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca, as orientações realizadas pelo enfermeiro no pré-operatório e se estas contribuem para minimizar o estresse e demais sentimentos vivenciados por eles no perioperatório. Avaliaram-se 11 indivíduos em pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca internados em clínica cardiológica de hospital porte IV do Rio Grande do Sul. Os dados foram coletados de maio a junho de 2013, por meio de formulário de dados clínico-sociodemográficos e entrevista semiestruturada. Observaram-se aspectos de pesquisa com pessoas, projeto aprovado por comitê de ética, parecer nº 247. 142. Da análise dos resultados, conforme preceitos da análise de conteúdo, emergiram duas categorias analíticas e seis subcategorias, que versam sobre orientações do enfermeiro no pré-operatório e relevância destas na percepção dos pesquisados. Concluiu-se que o enfermeiro contribui para a minimização do estresse e demais sentimentos vivenciados pelos pacientes no perioperatório.
