Dual-Mode Based Sliding Mode Control Approach for Nonlinear Chemical Processes

Abstract: This paper synthesizes a new sliding mode controller (SMC) approach to enhance tracking and regulation tasks by following dual-mode concepts. The new control law consists of two distinct types of operation, using the combination of higher gain to large error signals (transient) and lower gain to small error signals (the region around the set point). The design is presented from a dual-mode (PD–PID) sliding surface operating in concert, fulfilling desired control objectives to ensure stability and performance. … Show more

“…The mixing tank process is a nonlinear system , and consists of the simultaneous entry of the hot flow W 1 ( t ) and the cold flow W 2 ( t ) into the process with temperatures T 1 ( t ) and T 2 ( t ), respectively, as shown in Figure . The output T 4 ( t ) is the temperature of the mixture measured at a point 125 ft downstream of the mixing tank.…”

“…These performance measures, ISE, IAE, ITSE, and ITAE, are also commonly utilized to fine-tune the PID controller's parameters [83]. ISE quantifies the integral of the squared error between the set point and process variable over the entire control interval, while IAE measures the integral of the absolute error over time [84]. ITSE combines ISE and the integral of the squared controller output over time.…”

“…The performance of the process response depends on the chosen sliding surface. How the SMC works depends on the sliding surface, and changing the sliding surface can change how well the SMC works [3,15,36,37]. The sliding surface selected from [12], shown in Equation (20), is employed:…”

“…The FODUP model was expressed in Equation (16). Once K, τ, and t 0 are known, K D and λ can be calculated using Equations ( 32) and (37), respectively. Meanwhile, K p and t f are determined by trial and error until the controller provides an adequate response.…”
