SummaryHenna, the dried and powdered leaf of Lawsonia inermis, is widely used as a dye for the skin, hair, and nails, and as an expression of body art, especially in Islamic and Hindu cultures. As it stains the skin reddish-brown, it is also called red henna. Black henna is the combination of red henna with p-phenylenediamine (PPD), and is used for temporary 'black henna tattoos'. This article provides a full review of the side-effects of topical application of red and black henna, both cutaneous (allergic and non-allergic) and systemic. Red henna appears to be generally safe, with rare instances of contact allergy and type I hypersensitivity reactions. In children with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, topical application of henna may cause life-threatening haemolysis. Black henna tattoos will induce contact allergy to its ingredient PPD at an estimated frequency of 2.5%. Once sensitized, the patients may experience allergic contact dermatitis from the use of hair dyes containing PPD. There are often cross-reactions to other hair dyes, dyes used in textiles, local anaesthetics, and rubber chemicals. The sensitization of children to PPD may have important consequences for health and later career prospects. Systemic toxicity of black henna has been reported in certain African countries.

Tattoo is going to be a very common practice especially among young people and we are witnessing a gradual increase of numerous potential complications to tattoo placement which are often seen by physicians, but generally unknown to the public. The most common skin reactions to tattoo include a transient acute inflammatory reaction due to trauma of the skin with needles and medical complications such as superficial and deep local infections, systemic infections, allergic contact dermatitis, photodermatitis, granulomatous and lichenoid reactions, and skin diseases localized on tattooed area (eczema, psoriasis, lichen, and morphea). Next to these inflammatory skin reactions we have to consider also the possibility of the development of cutaneous conditions such as pseudolymphomatous reactions and pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia. The aim of this study is to underline the importance of an early diagnosis by performing a histological examination especially when we are in front of suspected papulonodular lesions arising from a tattoo, followed by a proper treatment, since cutaneous neoplastic evolution is known to be a rare but possible complication.

Masyarakat khususnya remaja ingin tampil menarik di dalam pergaulannya. Remaja banyak yang mengikuti tren yang mereka lihat di media sosial, salah satunya adalah penggunaan tato di tubuh mereka. Tetapi, karena keluarga mereka sangat melarang penggunaan tato permanen itu baik karena urusan agama dan kesehatan, mereka mencari alternatif dengan menggunakan tato temporer. Banyak dari mereka belum mengetahui kandungan tato temporer seperti hena ataupun stiker tato yang mereka gunakan. Bahan tato temporer itu ditambahkan dengan senyawa berbahaya seperti PPD dan logam berat agar warna yang dihasilkan menjadi lebih baik. Tetapi PPD dan logam berat dapat mengganggu kesehatan mereka. Oleh karena itu, perlu diberikan edukasi tentang penggunaan tato temporer dan bahaya yang ditimbulkan ketika menggunakan tato temporer itu. Kegiatan Abdimas telah dilaksanakan di Lingkungan RT 02 RW 01 Kelurahan Rawa Buaya dengan jumlah peserta abdimas sebanyak 26 orang. Peserta abdimas didominasi oleh perempuan sebanyak 25 orang (96%) dan 1 orang laki laki (4%). Pengetahuan warga abdimas mengenai bahaya tato temporer meningkat sebanyak 92,31 % dari sebelum dilakukan pemaparan materi.
