In this paper a coordinated master control for a solid fuel power plant has been developed and the performance evaluated in terms of tracking capability, stability and robustness. The control strategy has been model-based predictive control (MPC) and it was evaluated on a nonlinear process model of the Vattenfall power plant Idbäcken in Nyköping, Sweden. The developed master MPC with gain scheduling has better performance compared to the existing PID controller which has been thoroughly studied and tuned in a previous project. The robustness of the proposed master MPC controller against common disturbances and parameter variation has been investigated and it shows that the proposed controller is more robust than the existing PID controller.Key words: Master Predictive Control, Solid fuel power plant, Gain scheduling.Nadre eno modelsko upravljanje elektranom. U ovome radu razvijeno je koordinirano nadre eno upravljanje za elektrane na kruta goriva te su provjereni pokazatelji kvalitete u smislu praćenja, stabilnosti i robustnosti. Koristi se modelsko prediktivno upravljanje koje je provjereno na nelinearnom modelu procesa Vattenfall elektrane Idbäcken u Nyköping, Švedska. Razvijeni nadre eni MPC s prekapčanjem ima bolje performanse u usporedbni s PID regulatorom koji je bio temeljito proučen i podešen u prijašnjem projektu. Istražena je robustnost predloženog nadre enog MPC-a u odnosu na šum i promjene parametara. The traditional control strategy based on PID controllers may be unsatisfactory when dealing with processes with large time delay and constraints. This paper presents a supervisory model based constrained predictive controller (MPC) for a combined cycle power plant (CCPP). First, a non-linear dynamic model of CCPP using the laws of physics was proposed. Then, the supervisory control using the linear constrained MPC method was designed to tune the performance of the PID controllers by including output constraints and manipulating the set points. This scheme showed excellent tracking and disturbance rejection results and improved performance compared with a stand-alone PID controller's scheme. A control-oriented dynamic model of a catalytic partial oxidation-based fuel processor is developed using physicsbased principles. The Fuel Processor System (FPS) converts a hydrocarbon fuel to a hydrogen (H 2 ) rich mixture that is directly feed to the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Stack (PEM-FCS). Cost and performance requirements of the total powerplant typically lead to highly integrated designs and stringent control objectives. Physics based component models are extremely useful in understanding the system level interactions, implications on system performance and in model-based controller design. The model can be used in a multivariable analysis to determine characteristics of the system that might limit performance of a controller or a control design.In this paper, control theoretic tools such as the relative gain array (RGA) and the observability gramian are employed to guide the control design for a FPS combined with a PEM-FC. For example this simple multivariable analysis suggests that a decrease in HDS volume is critical for the hydrogen starvation control. Moreover, RGA analysis shows different level of coupling between the system dynamics at different power levels. Finally, the observability analysis can help in assessing the relative cost-benefit ratio in adding extra sensors in the system.
