“…All these criteria are well met by CaPs and their composites. In order to make the implant antibacterial, various antibiotics have been incorporated in CaPs [ 510 , 511 , 525 ], for example, gentamicin [ 591 , 592 , 593 , 594 , 595 , 596 ], ibuprofen [ 597 , 598 ], cephalothin [ 593 ], amoxicillin [ 593 ], tobramycin [ 593 ], zoledronate [ 599 ], aspirin [ 600 ], flomoxef sodium [ 601 ], tetracycline [ 602 , 603 ], vancomycin [ 604 , 605 ], streptomycin [ 606 ], etc. Tetracylines have a broad spectrum of antibiotic action and, therefore, are attractive candidates.…”

“…Furthermore, each from the aforementioned formulations might be covered by a layer of nanodimensional CaPO 4 , as it was done by Zandi et al [ 632 ], who coated a biocomposite of nano-sized rods HA with gelatin by nano-sized HA. Several nanodimensional biocomposites were found to be applicable as carriers for delivery of drugs and growth factors [ 609 , 633 , 634 , 635 ], as well as promising vectors with ultrahigh gene loading and transfection efficiency [ 636 ]. Data are available on the excellent biocompatibility of such biocomposites [ 545 ].…”

“…24 Recently we reported a novel biocompatible, bioactive phosphate glass/ hydroxyapatite (PG/HA) nanocomposite as drug carrier for orthopedic applications. 25 Several polymers such as poly (Llactic) acid (PLLA), 26,27 poly(caprolactone) (PCL), 27 alginate, 27 gelatin, 27,28 and poly-b-hydroxybutyrate 29 have been investigated as possible coating system for bioceramic scaffolds. In general, synthetic polymers exhibit better mechanical strength than natural polymers.…”
