Chemicals associated with health problems can migrate from packaging into food matrices. Therefore, consumers need to be aware of health concerns associated with incorrectly used plastic food packaging. However, little is known about consumers’ knowledge and their plastics usage practices. This study assessed this knowledge and practices among young South African adult consumers. Our online survey of 293 participants focused on their objective (actual) and subjective (self-perceived) knowledge about plastic food packaging care and safety, their utilization practices, and their sources of information about safe use of plastics. Participants’ utilization practices showed broad misuse. Their subjective knowledge about the correct use of plastic packaging was in most respects contradicted by their limited objective knowledge. We found that plastic identification codes on packaging largely failed in their informative purpose; instead, participants mainly consulted informal information sources about plastics. The knowledge gaps, unsafe plastic use practices, and information source deficiencies identified here can help to guide future improvements. We call for consumer education, across all demographics, about plastic utilization practices and associated health concerns about plastic chemicals. We also highlight the need for the government, food and plastics industries to join forces in ensuring that consumers are informed about safe plastic packaging usage.

Resveratrol Butyrate Esters Inhibit Obesity Caused by Perinatal Exposure to Bisphenol A in Female Offspring Rats

Resveratrol butyrate esters (RBE) are derivatives of resveratrol (RSV) and butyric acid and exhibit biological activity similar to that of RSV but with higher bioavailability. The aim of this study was designed as an animal experiment to explore the effects of RBE on the serum biochemistry, and fat deposits in the offspring rats exposed to bisphenol A (BPA), along with the growth and decline of gut microbiota. We constructed an animal model of perinatal Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure to observe the effects of RBE supplementation on obesity, blood lipids, and intestinal microbiota in female offspring rats. Perinatal exposure to BPA led to weight gain, lipid accumulation, high levels of blood lipids, and deterioration of intestinal microbiota in female offspring rats. RBE supplementation reduced the weight gain and lipid accumulation caused by BPA, optimised the levels of blood lipids, significantly reduced the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio, and increased and decreased the abundance of S24-7 and Lactobacillus, respectively. The analysis of faecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels revealed that BPA exposure increased the faecal concentration of acetate, which could be reduced via RBE supplementation. However, the faecal concentrations of propionate and butyrate were not only significantly lower than that of acetate, but also did not significantly change in response to BPA exposure or RBE supplementation. Hence, RBE can suppress BPA-induced obesity in female offspring rats, and it demonstrates excellent modulatory activity on intestinal microbiota, with potential applications in perinatological research.

Preparation of carbon self-doped g-C3N4 for efficient degradation of bisphenol A under visible light irradiation

In this study, visible-light-driven carbon self-doped graphitic carbon nitride (C-doped g-C 3 N 4 ) photocatalyst was fabricated by a facile method with urea and ammonium citrate and used for photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous environment. These experimental data showed that the prepared C-doped g-C 3 N 4 showed high catalytic activity, and its photocatalytic degradation rate constant and mineralization rate of BPA were about 6.7 and 3.5 times higher than that of the pristine g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The prepared modi ed g-C 3 N 4 introduced additional carbon atoms, which generated C-O-C bonds with C in the g-C 3 N 4 lattice. In contrast to g-C 3 N 4 , carbon doping enhanced the visible light absorption range of C-doped g-C 3 N 4 , reduced its band gap, and improved the separation e ciency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Reactive species, among which are superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) and photogenerated holes (h + ) acted as an important part to the high photodegradation activity under visible light irradiation, which was revealed by radical quenching experiment and ESR results. This work puts forward a one-pot strategy for the preparation of C-doped g-C 3 N 4 , displacing the high-energy consuming and complicated preparation technology with a promising industrial applications.
