Downregulation of Notch4 – a prognostic marker in distinguishing oral verrucous carcinoma from oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: These preliminary findings strongly support the fact that Notch4 is downregulated in oral verrucous carcinoma and could be considered as a suitable prognostic marker in distinguishing oral verrucous carcinoma from oral squamous cell carcinoma. This distinguishing marker can help in improving therapeutic options in patients diagnosed with oral verrucous carcinoma.

“…Finally, although a review on the prognosis of P-OSCC has recently been published (González-Moles et al, 2021), it was not guided by the most recent preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses checklist (Page et al, 2021) and included verrucous carcinomas as a malignant transformation type. Since lymph node and distant metastases are very rare in verrucous carcinomas and therefore have a better prognosis than OSCC (Harishankar et al, 2019), this can directly impact the real prognostic impact of the disease when compared to conventional OSCC. Thus, we believe that this review will add to the understanding of the specific prognosis of P-OSCC, highlighting the analysis of important prognostic information, such as recurrence, new primary tumours and metastases.…”

“… 313 Early diagnosis holds the potential to positively impact the survival rates of OSCC. Research indicates that Notch receptors, specifically Notch1, 314 , 315 Notch3, 316 and Notch4, 317 , 318 exhibit high levels in human OSCC tissues and are associated with a poor prognosis. This suggests that Notch receptors could serve as biomarkers for the early diagnosis of OSCC.…”
