Menstrual-derived Stem Cells (MenSC) are a potential novel source of mesenchymal stem cells. There is an increased interest in investigating the therapeutic potential of MenSC due to the various advantages they exhibit, when compared to other types of stem cells. MenSC are obtained non-invasively from menstrual blood. Thus, collection of MenSC is simple, reproducible and can be carried out periodically, with minimal complications. MenSC are present in abundance, are highly proliferative, exhibit a low immunogenicity and lack ethical issues. MenSC have shown the ability to differentiate into several lineages. The therapeutic potential of MenSC in non-gynaecological applications has been investigated in wound healing, neurological, musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, and liver disorders, as well as in diabetes and cancer. Human clinical trials are limited. To date, therapeutic efficacy and safety have been reported in patients with Avian influenza A subtype H7N9, COVID-19, congestive heart failure, multiple sclerosis and Duchene muscular dystrophy. However, further clinical trials in humans should be conducted, to study the long-term therapeutic effects of these stem cells in various diseases and to further explore their mechanism of action. This systematic review focuses on the application of MenSC in non-gynaecological diseases.

BACKGROUND The therapeutic effects of various stem cells in acute liver failure (ALF) have been demonstrated in preclinical studies. However, the specific type of stem cells with the highest therapeutic potential has not been determined. AIM To validate the efficacy of stem cells in ALF model and to identify the most promising stem cells. METHODS A search was conducted on the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane databases from inception to May 3, 2022, and updated on November 16, 2022 to identify relevant studies. Two independent reviewers performed the literature search, identification, screening, quality assessment, and data extraction. RESULTS A total of 89 animal studies were included in the analysis. The results of traditional meta-analysis showed that stem cell therapy could significantly reduce the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase [weighted mean difference (WMD) = -181.05 (-191.71, -170.39)], aspartate aminotransferase [WMD = -309.04 (-328.45, -289.63)], tumor necrosis factor-alpha [WMD = -8.75 (-9.93, -7.56)], and interleukin-6 [WMD = -10.43 (-12.11, -8.76)] in animal models of ALF. Further subgroup analysis and network meta-analysis showed that although mesenchymal stem cells are the current research hotspot, the effect of liver stem cells (LSCs) on improving liver function is significantly better than that of the other five types of stem cells. In addition, the ranking results showed that the possibility of LSCs improving liver function ranked first. This fully proves the great therapeutic potential of LSCs, which needs to be paid more attention in the future. CONCLUSION LSCs may have a higher therapeutic potential. Further high-quality animal experiments are needed to explore the most effective stem cells for ALF.

Background This study is designed to compare the menstrual blood stem cells (MenSCs) and bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs)-secreted factors with or without pre-treatment regimen using basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and 5-aza-2ʹ-deoxycytidine (5-aza) and also regenerative capacity of pre-treated MenSCs and/or BMSCs in a rat model of myocardial infarction (MI). Methods BMSCs and MenSCs were pre-treated with bFGF and 5-aza for 48 h and we compared the paracrine activity by western blotting. Furthermore, MI model was created and the animals were divided into sham, MI, pre-treated BMSCs, and pre-treated MenSCs groups. The stem cells were administrated via tail vain. 35 days post-MI, serum and tissue were harvested for further investigations. Results Following pre-treatment, vascular endothelium growth factor, hypoxia-inducible factor-1, stromal cell-derived factor-1, and hepatocyte growth factor were significantly increased in secretome of MenSCs in compared to BMSCs. Moreover, systemic administration of pre-treated MenSCs, leaded to improvement of cardiac function, preservation of myocardium from further subsequent injuries, promotion the angiogenesis, and reduction the level of NF-κB expression in compared to the pre-treated BMSCs. Also, pre-treated MenSCs administration significantly decreased the serum level of Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) in compared to the pre-treated BMSCs and MI groups. Conclusions bFGF and 5-aza pre-treated MenSCs offer superior cardioprotection compare to bFGF and 5-aza pre-treated BMSCs following MI.
