Double-Needle Yamane Technique Using Flanged Haptics in Ocular Trauma—A Retrospective Survey of Visual Outcomes and Safety

Abstract: To evaluate visual outcomes and safety of the double-needle technique using flanged haptics (Yamane technique) in patients with aphakia caused by ocular trauma at a trauma referral center. Retrospective: Consecutive interventional case series of 30 patients who underwent the Yamane technique due to posttraumatic aphakia. The double-needle technique using flanged haptics was combined with anterior vitrectomy (group A) in 14 patients, and with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) (group B) due to retinal detachment, nucl… Show more

“…However, the mean final BCVA was better for the CTL group, which is most likely due to lesser prevalence of comorbidities. For secondary IOL AK implantation [ 11 , 22 , 23 ] and flanged IOL fixation [ 24 ], similar visual and refractive outcomes were reported taking into consideration common ocular history of patients which included RD repair, glaucoma, trauma with and without globe rupture, complicated cataract surgery [ 8 , 25 , 26 ]. The likelihood of certain postoperative complications may be linked to specific surgical procedures, and the degree of improvement in visual outcomes may be linked to the patient’s ocular history [ 25 ].…”

“…The unique morphology and potential complications of MSP challenge the management of the condition. Various surgical approaches have been attempted in sporadic MSP cases, including angle-supported IOL ( 12 ), iris-claw IOL ( 13 ), retropupillary iris-claw IOL ( 14 ), and sutured ( 15 ) or sutureless ( 16 , 17 ) sclera-fixated IOL. However, most of the procedures adapt lensectomy or capsulotomy to remove the capsular bag, and anterior vitrectomy is often requisite.…”

“…Other structures of the eye can be also damaged as a result of trauma, for example the cornea, lens, or posterior segment. Thus, additional surgery may be needed, including intraocular lens (IOL) scleral fixation [ 6 ] or pars plana vitrectomy [ 7 ].…”
