DOSY Study on Dynamic Catenation: Self-Assembly of a [3]Catenane as a Meta-Stable Compound from Twelve Simple Components

Abstract: Synthesis of [2]catenane 6 has been successfully achieved by the combination of Pd complex 1 and pyridines 2 and 3 at a molar ratio of 2:1:1 in D20. A mixture of square molecule 4 (prepared from 1 and 2) and macrocycle 5 (obtained from 1 and 3), in which the final ratio of 1, 2, and 3 was kept 2:1:1 reorganizes in D2O/CD3OD (1:1) to form 6 within one day. However, the same mixture in D2O shows the formation of novel [3]catenane 7 along with the [2]catenane. In order to make 7, the theoretical ratio of componen… Show more

“…Although examples of discrete linear [4]- or [5]catenanes are still rare in the literature, other successful strategies for the synthesis of linear [3]catenanes include an amide-based [3]catenane rotary motor (see section 5.2),[ 102 ] Fujita′s Pd II [3]catenane,[ 103 ] Loeb′s host–guest [3]catenane,[ 104 ] and Sanders’ [3]catenane generated from a DCL. “…Because of the outwardly complex nature of the composition, we also considered this mixture to be an ideal candidate for analysis by new pure shift NMR methods,[3133] alongside an array of standard NMR techniques ( 1 H- 1 H COSY, 1 H- 13 C HSQC, 1 H- 13 C HMBC and 1 H DOSY). [34a–f] This is the first time that pure shift diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) NMR methodology has been applied to a complex reaction system of partially unknown composition. By using these techniques, we confirmed the direct formation of both TNA nucleoside precursors rac - 15 and rac - 16 (Scheme 2 b) amongst the products from the reaction of 6 and 7 .…”

“…However, heteroligated hexanuclear assemblies with similar designs to those mentioned above are not known. The known heteroleptic hexanuclear complexes are [(PdL′) 6 (L a )(L b )] 2 ‐type [2]catenanes and [(PdL′) 6 (L a ) 2 (L b ) 4 ]‐type [3]catenanes …”
