Dose–response study of probiotic bacteria Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis BB-12 and Lactobacillus paracasei subsp paracasei CRL-341 in healthy young adults

Abstract: Objective: This study was performed to investigate the dose-response effects of supplementation with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp lactis (BB-12) and Lactobacillus paracasei subsp paracasei (CRL-431) on blood lipids, recovery from feces and bowel habits. Changes of the fecal microflora was analyzed in the 10 10 CFU/day probiotic and placebo group. Design: The study was designed as a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, parallel dose-response study. Subjects: Healthy young adults (18-40 years) were … Show more

“…One subject's initial fecal sample tested positive, suggesting that that subject had unknowingly ingested it, as has also been found to have occurred in other studies (23,30) and is plausible given the vast variety of available foods harboring this culture. The percentage of subjects who tested positive for strain Bb-12 during probiotic yogurt consumption in this study was consistent with studies that used comparable levels of this strain (7) and with the correlation between dosage and subsequent recovery of this probiotic from fecal samples (18). The rapid disappearance of Bb-12 from fecal samples following cessation of feeding is consistent with other published clinical studies (7,22).…”

“…The gut microflora is resilient and relatively refractory to most probiotic and prebiotic treatments [31]. Given its positive role in inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, and asthma, GPR43 agonists may be more effective than probiotic supplements.…”
