“…In conclusion, the irradiance dependency of the UVA1 MED may explain the differences between the 24-h MEDs observed in our study 2 and the previous investigation of Beattie et al 3 Importantly, the aforementioned statement also implies that UVA1 phototesting should be performed with the same irradiance that is used for the actual phototherapeutic treatment. 8 Otherwise a correction factor has to be applied to determine the safe UVA1 starting dosage.…”

“…Ethics approval was obtained from the review board of the Ruhr-University Bochum. As recently described in detail [4,5], the minimal erythema doses (MEDs) for UVA1 and UVB was determined using the Sellamed 2000 System Dr. Sellmeier (Sellas, Gevelsberg, Germany) and the Saalmann Multitester SBB LT 400 (Saalmann GmbH, Herford, Germany), respectively. On 3 consecutive days, the subjects received daily 1.5 MED-UVA1 as well as 1.5 MED-UVB on two opposite sites on the right and left medial scapular region, respectively.…”

“…However, most of these studies have assessed either erythema [13,14,16] or pigmentation [15,17] but not both simultaneously. The earliest time of reading was at 24 h. In the present study we surprisingly observed a pronounced decrease in skin pigmentation during the readings between 6 h and 3 days after UVB irradiation.…”
