Doppler Ultrasound in Canine Pregnancy

Abstract: Doppler ultrasound is a useful method for assessing development of the placental and fetal circulation during normal and abnormal canine pregnancy. Further studies are still necessary to widely use this technique in clinical practice.

“…Physiological gestation is accompanied by significant adaptations in maternal hemodynamics, both in women and in female dogs (DUVEKOT et al, 1993) and these ensure adequate uterine perfusion and consequently normal fetal development (VALENSISE et al, 2000;BLANCO et al, 2008). Results of the hemodynamic adaptations involving the cardiovascular system in mammals are very similar (DESAI et al, 2004;BLANCO et al, 2011).…”

“…Among these, the cardiovascular system responds with hemodynamic changes and, in particular, cardiac output increases as a result of reduced systemic vascular resistance (HAMEED & SKLANSKY, 2007). These changes play a major role in maintaining uterine perfusion, and they are crucial for fetal development (EGHBALI et al, 2005;BLANCO et al, 2008).…”

“…Pulsed wave Doppler allows analysis of blood flow within a single vessel. The Doppler waveform represents changes in the velocity of the blood flow during the cardiac cycle (Blanco, Arias, & Gobello, ; Giannico, Gil, Garcia, & Froes, ; Poulsen Nautrup, ).…”

“…The use of colour and pulsed Doppler provides qualitative and quantitative vascular information about maternal and foetal haemodynamic characteristics in real time by means of some parameters such as systolic peak velocity (SPV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), pulsatility index (PI) resistance index (RI), blood direction and blood type (Blanco et al, ; Giannico et al, ; Nicolaides et al, ; Poulsen Nautrup, ).…”

“…However, there are no studies on models of vascular function. Doppler sonography, a rapid noninvasive technique that provides valuable information about the maternal‐fetal hemodynamic situation, has been routinely used to monitor high‐risk pregnancies in many species, including humans . Consistent evaluations of fetal and maternal vascular Doppler velocities in mice is possible using high‐frequency sonography .…”
