Abstract: Dopamine (DA) has been demonstrated to play an important role in regulating cortical activity in both neocortical and periallocortical regions. However, marked differences between these two types of cortices in the laminar pattern of DA axons, the types and distribution of DA receptors, and the postnatal development of the DA innervation suggest that DA may have region-specific effects. Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD.
