There have been studied new promising winter common wheat varieties ‘Ambar’, ‘Premiera’ and ‘Ermak’, the leading variety according to the area occupied in the Rostov region. The variety ‘Don 107’ was used as a standard according to reserve protein loci to identify introgression of genetic material from rye, and there has been studied the effect of the translocation T1BL.1RS on the severity of grain quality traits. The samples were grown in a competitive variety testing conducted in the department of winter wheat breeding and seed production of the ARC “Donskoy” in 2017-2019. Estimations, records, and observations were carried out in accordance with the methodological instructions of the State Variety Testing of agricultural crops. In order to identify rye translocations, there has been used the method of electrophoresis of alcohol-soluble reserve proteins in an acidic medium in a starch gel. There has been determined that the mean productivity of the new promising variety ‘Ambar’ over the years of study exceeded the standard by 6%, and the variety ‘Ermak’ by 7%. The excess of maximum productivity was 5% and 23%, respectively, over the standard and the leading variety. The variety ‘Premiera’ has had mean productivity higher by 13 and 14% compared to the standard ‘Don 107’ and the variety ‘Ermak’, respectively. There has been established a maximum productivity excess to the standard and the leading variety by 3% and 9%. At the same time, their flour strength and SDS-sedimentation were 63% and 60%, 102% and 97%, respectively. According to protein and gluten percentage in grain, the varieties ‘Ambar’ and ‘Premiera’, like ‘Don 107’ and ‘Ermak’ have fallen into the same quality group of class 3, being characterized with valuable grain. An important advantage of the ‘varieties Ambar’ and ‘Premiera’ is resistance to brown rust, yellow rust, stem rust and powdery mildew, since the translocation contains resistance genes to these diseases.

For the successful development of wheat breeding in Russia, there is a great need in a genetically diverse initial material, presented the collection of the All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources named after N.I. Vavilov (VIR), including samples of synthetic hexaploid wheat (SHW) developed at CIMMYT by crossing Triticum durum Au B с Aegilops tauschii D. The current paper has presented the study results of such artificially developed hexaploid synthetic samples. The purpose of the current study was to compare the production indicators of hexaploid synthetic samples and their macromutant forms with bread wheat varieties and to evaluate them as an initial breeding material. The plants were grown in ordinary blackearth (chernozem) on the fields of the FSBSI FRARC. There has been shown that macromutational phenotypic transformations continue to occur in the developed hexaploid synthetic samples during the vegetation period. In the agricultural year of 2019/2020, in the sample ‘k-65488’ there were identified macromutant forms almost identical to awnless bread wheat. The close phenotypic similarity of macromutants has suggested their easier and more effective crossing with existing bread wheat varieties. There has been found that according to their production characteristics, the identified macromutants turned out to be quite identical, and the synthetic sample ‘k-65509’ even surpassed the comparable bread wheat varieties ‘Bezostaya 1’ and ‘Mironovskaya 808’. However, spikelet scales in the identified macromutant forms, despite their phenomenal similarity with the representatives of Triticum aestivum L., still remain quite hard, which makes threshing difficult. Taking into consideration the production indicators of synthetic samples, which are mainly determined by the contribution of highly productive durum wheat, we can consider them and, especially, the identified macromutant forms, as a very promising initial material to improve the present bread wheat variety samples using hybridization.

The main purpose of breeding and commercial production is the quantity of grain and its quality. Occupying 74 % in the structure of grain crops, and 80 % in terms of gross yields, wheat grain is the most important source of income for grain producers in the Rostov region. The purpose of the current study was to reveal the effect of forecrops on productivity and SDS-sedimentation of the promising winter bread wheat varieties. In the trial there were studied 12 winter bread wheat varieties developed by the FSBSI “ARC “Donskoy” and sent to the State Variety Testing in recent years. There were estimated productivity and the amount of SDS-sedimentation. On average, over the three years of study (2019–2021), for all the studied forecrops, in terms of productivity there have been identified such winter wheat varieties of the intensive type as ‘Razdolie’ (7.14 t/ha), ‘Razgulay’ (7.67 t/ha) and ‘Vasilich’ (7.51 t/ha), which makes it possible to recommend these genotypes for sowing according to high and medium levels of Agricultural background. Among winter wheat varieties of semi-intensive type there has been identified only one variety ‘Donets’ (7.31 t/ha), which allows us to characterize it as a universal variety and recommend it for sowing in production according to high, medium and low levels of Agricultural background. According to the value of SDS-sedimentation for all the studied forecrops, there have been identified such varieties of intensive type as ‘Razdolie’ (62 ml), ‘Azov Sea’ (61 ml), ‘Razgulay’ (63 ml) and ‘Vasilich’ (63 ml). The varieties of semi-intensive type did not significantly exceed the value of SDS-sedimentation of the standard variety or were at its level, however, the values were high. Such SDS-sedimentation values have indicated that the presented genotypes are able to form high grain quality for all the studied forecrops and regardless of the productivity value.
