Abstract: Background. Gastrointestinal motility and serum thyroid hormone levels are closely related. Our aim was to analyze whether there is a disorder in esophagogastric motor functions as a result of hypothyroidism. Materials and Methods. The study group included 30 females (mean age ± SE 45.17 ± 2.07 years) with primary hypothyroidism and 10 healthy females (mean age ± SE 39.40 ± 3.95 years). All cases underwent esophagogastric endoscopy and scintigraphy. For esophageal scintigraphy, dynamic imaging of esophagus mot… Show more

“…Hashimoto's thyroiditis is associated with a goitre, which can also cause dysphagia. One study reported mean oesophageal transit and gastric emptying times were significantly prolonged in people with hypothyroidism compared to healthy controls; all hypothyroid participants reported minor dyspeptic symptoms [19]. This study did not identify any significant link between reduced gastric emptying and gastric mucosal pathology.…”

“…Swallowing dysfunctions are the result of compressive effects or the consequence of surgical interventions (2,3) , with gastrointestinal tract dysmotility leading the complaint reports (4)(5)(6) . Changes in the oropharyngeal transit differ according to the type of thyroid disease and seem to be more concentrated in the laryngopharyngeal region (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12) .…”

Changes in the oropharyngeal transit differ according to the type of thyroid disease and seem to be more concentrated in the laryngopharyngeal region (4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12) . In hypothyroidism, discomfort is perceived in the cervical region, manifested as dry throat, dyspnea, globus pharyngeus, pain, itching, and burning (5,8) , which are symptoms related to myxedema that compromise laryngeal mobility and the proper functioning of pharyngoesophageal transit (4,6) .…”

“…A study was conducted on 30 female patients suffering from primary hypothyroidism and 10 healthy females as the control group. Motility disturbances in the form of significantly higher mean esophageal transit time (52.56 s vs. 24.3 s P = 0.02) and gastric emptying time (49.06 s vs. 30.4 s P = 0.01) were seen in patients with hypothyroidism compared with the control group (Yaylali et al 2009). About 6.7 per cent subjects suffering from hypothyroidism avoided consuming curd as its consumption caused gastric problems.…”
