Does Experience Enhance Cognitive Flexibility? An Overview of the Evidence Provided by the Environmental Enrichment Studies

Abstract: Neuroplasticity accounts for the ability of the brain to change in both structure and function in consequence of life experiences. An enhanced stimulation provided by the environment is able to create a form of brain, neural, and cognitive reserve, which allows an individual to cope better with the environmental demands, also in case of neural damage leading to cognitive decline. With its complex manipulation of several stimuli, the animal experimental paradigm of environmental enrichment (EE) appears particul… Show more

“…A powerful tool to enhance cerebellar reserve is the exposure to complex environmental stimulations, as occurring in the EE paradigm. Among the multiple cognitive functions beneficially affected by enhanced environmental stimulations, cognitive flexibility stands out as a domain that is heavily reliant on cerebellar circuitries [101,104,109] and which enables the individual to effectively change behavior in response to the needs of the environment, even in the presence of brain pathologies [216]. It is no coincidence that this flexibility exploits two cerebellar neuronal properties: multifaceted synaptic plasticity, and redundant information processing [10].…”

“…Housing in cages with obstacles, shelters, running wheels and several cage mates has been generally considered to be an enriched environment ( Würbel, 2001 ) and has been shown to increase brain plasticity ( Gelfo, 2019 ; Simpson and Kelly, 2011 ; van Praag et al, 2000v ). This is of course contrasted against the standard laboratory setting, which is a low-stimulating environment with only 2–4 animals in a small cage, food ad libitum and a wooden block to chew on.…”

“…Flexibility is considered a key component to face and manage important life changes; poor flexibility may result in great distress for a person undergoing sudden and/or important life modification, and is a significant aspect of several psychiatric disorders (e.g. obsessive personality or delusional disorder) [25][26].…”
