BackgroundVegetables and fruits are highly recommended in diets because of their nutritional importance. Among those, leguminous vegetables are more important, for low-income countries, because of their protein, mineral contents and potential to increase food security and income. In Benin, snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are the most consumed leguminous vegetables; however, their production is declining, driving the need to understand the current status of its industry to propose solutions for the revival of the sector. This paper assessed the production system, market value, marketing channels, seed systems, and the constraints associated with Benin’s snap bean production from a gender lens.MethodsA semi-structured interview was conducted with 602 bean producers and traders, randomly selected from 12 major vegetable-producing areas across Benin.ResultsThe study found a drastic decline in the production of snap beans, with more than 60% abandonment over the last decade. As a consequence, Benin gets supplied through importations, with the highest importation flow coming from Togo (51%), followed by Burkina Faso (25%), and Ghana (12%). Only 13% of the beans traded are locally produced. The leading causes of the decline were pests and diseases that affected the crops’ yield and quality, causing the local produce to be less valued than the imported ones. Women are heavily involved in marketing but cannot expand their business due to low production and high importation.DiscussionThe study recommends that integrated pest management (IPM) and new varieties with tolerance to major pests and diseases be developed to address market demand and producers trained in agronomic practices.

Vegetable production has been a booming activity in Benin for several years, as in most countries of the West African region. The Beninese state and many other organizations are working together to develop this activity, create jobs and strengthen food security in the country. In rural areas, this agricultural sub-sector is considered one of the important measures to guarantee food security and promote income diversification. However, questions arise about the viability of this form of activity. This study aims to analyze market gardening operations in the Commune of Athiémé in Benin. To achieve this objective, different data collection techniques are used, namely documentary research, observation, interviews and questionnaire surveys with market gardeners and an interview guide administered to local authorities. A sample of 206 market gardeners is questioned. The socio-demographic data of market gardeners and agricultural statistics (areas, production and yields, etc.) are collected. The results obtained showed that market garden production is a highly developed activity in the Commune of Athiémé and is practiced at all times of the year. The most developed methods of accessing land are by inheritance (31.9%) and by purchase (31.9%). Family labor was used most often on market gardening farms (76.21%). For water supply to farms, the dominant systems were those relating to irrigation, the use of rainwater and floodwater. The basic water distribution or irrigation equipment was motor pumps, which was used by 93.57% of market gardeners. For the fertilization, the majority of market gardeners prefer the use of Urea (44.44%) and NPK (35.28%). Only 10.83% use cow purse and poultry dung. For the control of crop pests and diseases, producers use a variety of chemical pesticides. Improved production systems, including training for producers, improved irrigation systems, soil fertilization and plant protection measures will promote the sustainability of vegetable farms.

Market garden crops constitutes an important source of food and is one of the most income-generating activities in Côte d'Ivoire. In the Abidjan district, several market gardening sites are located near illegal landfill sites, therefore representing a danger for consumers. Aims: This study was carried out to map these different sites, inventory the plant species cultivated and characterize the cultivation practices with a view to highlighting the constraints and identifying prospects for improvement. Methodology: Semi-structured individual interviews were carried out in 4 communes of Abidjan (Abobo, Bingerville, Cocody and Port-bouët) to collect information from 400 residents including 280 men and 120 women. The statistical analysis of the survey results was carried out using Google Form and Excel software. Results: The results revealed six (6) market garden sites with landfills distributed in four (4) different communes (Abobo - Akeikoi village; Bingerville - Bingerack city; Cocody - M'pouto village and M'badon village; Port-bouët - 4th bima and Mafiblé village). Thirteen (13) market garden species which are divided into eight families. Lettuce and basil are grown on all identified sites and represent the most cultivated species (40%). Market garden crops is practiced by young people aged 10 to 30 (70%) with a relatively low level of education. Pests (insects, rodents, fungi) and heavy metals from illegal dumps constitute the main obstacles to production and are vectors of frequent diseases. Conclusion: It would be wise to adopt an integration policy for market gardening, in urban development plans, and to combat the proliferation of uncontrolled landfill sites, this will help to improve the quality and yield of market garden crops in Abidjan.
