Abstract: Abstract:The high Paraná river basin includes the largest rivers from São Paulo State and a great ichthyofauna diversity with 236 species. The aim of this study was to describe the fish fauna composition from Mogi Guaçu hydroelectric dam and oxbow lakes downstream reservoir, according to species abundance temporal variations. A total of 2.341 individuals (85,8 kg biomass) belonging to 41 species were collected during August 2005 to July 2006. From this, 31 species were found in the reservoir and 24 in the oxbo… Show more

“…This ratio relates the overlap of the abundance and biomass curves and allows an interpretation of the environmental condition based on the fauna (WARWICK et al, 1987;OTERO, 2006;BRAGA, 2008). This is a method for assessing the status of polluted areas based in local populations, without the need for reference of the temporal or spatial series of controlled samples (WARWICK, 1986).…”

“…Other characteristics are: barrage with extension of 150 m, water fall with 7 m, two installed turbines, four flood gates and a fish ladder with 21 step-tanks for fish passage (Brandimarte et al, 2005;AESTietê, 2011). At the sampled site, bottom is muddy or sandmuddy, maximum depth is around 5 m and the border vegetation is dominated by sugar cane and pastures (Gonçalves & Braga, 2008). The analysis of temperature and rainfall in the studied area (average of 30 years, 1971 to 2005, data from meteorological station D4-100 located at Campininha farm) allowed the determination of dry (April to September) and wet (October to March) periods.…”

“…The damming of rivers transforms the aquatic environment (Castro & Arcifa, 1987;Nilsson et al, 2005), which favors some fish species, but has deleterious effects in others. Species that are able to adapt to the lentic environment created by the dam can be benefited by the change, becoming abundant or even dominant in these environments, such as fishes of Curimatidae family (Castro & Arcifa, 1987;Barbieri, 1995;Loureiro-Crippa & Hahn, 2006;Novakowski et al, 2007;Gonçalves & Braga, 2008).…”

“…The most abundant species in the Upstream Lake and Upstream Channel sites belong to different feeding guilds (omnivores and carnivores), which we hypothesise facilitates their coexistence and dominance at these sites (Sá‐Oliveira et al ., ). The omnivorous H. unimaculatus is considered an opportunistic species with great ecological plasticity in adapting to environmental changes (Petesse, Petrere & Spigolon, ; Gonçalves & Braga, ). On the other hand, A. ucayalensis is a generalised piscivore that ingests whole prey, which distinguishes it in at least one niche dimension from another dominant predator in the area, Serrassalmus gibbus , which cuts its prey into pieces before swallowing.…”
