“…Calcium is vital for bone ossification during amphibian metamorphosis (Baldwin & Bentley, 1980;Oguro et al, 1975;Pilkington & Simkiss, 1966;Stiffler, 1993). Tadpoles acquire environmental calcium across the skin (Guirguis et al, 1997;Stiffler et al, 1997;Stiffler, 1995Stiffler, , 1996Zerella & Stiffler, 1999) and gills (Baldwin & Bentley, 1980;Stiffler, 1993Stiffler, , 1996, and via dietary calcium through the wall of the small intestine (Robertson 1975(Robertson , 1976Stiffler, 1993Stiffler, , 1996. However, during peak metamorphosis, external gills are gone and tadpoles are unable to feed due to the restructuring of the mouth (Gosner, 1960;Pilkington & Simkiss, 1966).…”

“…Previous studies have shown that ultimobranchialectomy induces a diurnal rhythm in the urinary concentration of calcium (Robertson, 1970) and diurnal variations have been observed in duodenal calcium transport and the plasma concentration of calcium in intact frogs (Robertson, 1976). In the present study, diurnal variations in the S : Md ratios were apparent in both ultimobranchialectomized and parathyroidectomized frogs.…”

“…DISCUSSION Previous observations of duodenal calcium transport in frogs revealed considerable diurnal variations : peak periods of calcium transport were associated with corresponding peaks in the plasma and urinary concentrations of calcium. The variations in the plasma concen¬ tration of calcium were very wide, up to 3·7 mg/100 ml, which suggests that homeostatic mechanisms designed to prevent such variations are not well developed in this poorly ossified animal (Robertson, 1976). On the other hand, such oscillations might be considered as feedback signals to evoke or suppress endocrine activity which would influence calcium homeostasis.…”
