Distribution of Protein Gene Product 9.5-Immunopositive and NADPH-Diaphorase-Positive Neurons in the Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) Accessory Olfactory Bulb

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The principal center of the accessory olfactory system is the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB). In primates, simians are divided into two groups, New and Old World monkeys, and the AOB is present in only New World monkeys. The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a species of New World monkey. Although the morphology of the common marmoset AOB has been demonstrated, the distribution patterns of the mitral/tufted and granule cells of the AOB remain unclear. In the present study, therefore, the distri… Show more

“…Specifically, PGP is expressed in rodent (Johnson et al, 1994) and canine (Dennis et al, 2003) VNNE as well as rodent, canine, and marmoset accessory olfactory bulb (Taniguchi et al, 1993;Johnson et al, 1994;Nakajima et al, 1998aNakajima et al, , 1998bNakajima et al, , 2003. OMP is a phylogenetically highly conserved cytoplasmic protein expressed by mature olfactory chemosensory neurons of the MOE and VNO (Margolis, 1972(Margolis, , 1980Farbman and Margolis, 1980).…”

“…In rodents, the olfactory glomeruli have less‐defined architecture, although two subsets in the anterior and posterior parts of the accessory olfactory bulbs are conserved (Ichikawa et al, 1992). The accessory olfactory bulb in a New World monkey, common marmoset ( Callithrix jacchus ), exist as a small area at the dorsal side of the caudal end of the olfactory bulb, shows diffuse laminar structure and no functional divergence (Nakajima et al, 2003). The absence of the accessory olfactory bulb in the barfin flounder and the presence of olfactory glomeruli with different carbohydrate moieties were demonstrated in this study, suggesting that the glomerular layer of the fish may be divided into subcompartments, including a particular region and/or a group of olfactory glomeruli which might serve as an accessory olfactory bulb.…”

“…Neuron-specific markers have been reported to be expressed in the vomeronasal epithelium of different species of primates including marmoset (Dennis et al, 2004). Neurons in the AOB express markers typical of mitral/tufted cells (Nakajima et al, 2003). Marmoset, like other mammals and in contrast to rodents and opossums, display a homogeneous vomeronasal system where only V1R and Gi proteins are expressed (Takigami et al, 2004).…”
