“…In the last decade, many studies have focused on the contamination of sediment in the Yangtze estuary by organic micropollutants including PAHs (Liu et al, 2000;Xu et al, 2001;Hui et al, 2009), aliphatic hydrocarbons (Bouloubassi et al, 2001), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) (Liu et al, 2003(Liu et al, , 2008, PCBs (Liu et al, 2003;Shen et al, 2006), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (Chen et al, 2006;Shen et al, 2006).…”

“…Because of its environmental significance, ecological sensitivity and development potential, the unique environmental conditions in YRDNNR have received great attention. However, most studies of contamination in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) have focused on the distributions of contaminant metals, N and P (Song, 2000;Li et al, 2001;Chen et al, 2007;Hui et al, 2009). A few studies on hydrocarbon pollutants have been undertaken (Luo et al, 2005;Hui et al, 2009) but rarely on aliphatic hydrocarbons, which have toxic effects on aquatic organisms and are probably carcinogenic to humans.…”

“…Most studies on organic compounds address the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River downstream of the TGD (e.g., Feng et al 2007;Müller et al 2008;Tang et al 2008;He et al 2011;Yan et al 2013). PAH, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) were analyzed in sediments from Yangtze River estuary or Wuhan and found to originate mainly from heavy rains and surface runoff (Yang et al 2009;Ou et al 2010;Gao et al 2013), waste (Chen et al 2006) and sewage discharge points (Liu et al 2001;Yang et al 2009;Hui et al 2009;Ou et al 2010), and combustion (Liu et al 2001;Ou et al 2010;Li et al 2012). Generally, the concentrations of organic pollutants were found to increase from the remote west to the industrialized east (Liu et al 2011).…”
