In Europe and the Mediterranean region, the vegetation and climate of the Neogene is well understood, due to the abundance of pollen data, allowing the climate evolution at a time of global cooling to be described. This paper presents a climatic reconstruction of four key timeslices of the Neogene: the Mid-Miocene (c. 14 Ma), the Late Miocene (c. 10 Ma), the Early Pliocene (c. 5-5.3 Ma) and the Mid-Pliocene (c. 3.6 Ma). The results show that Neogene climate was warmer than today and that the transition from a weak latitudinal thermic gradient (around 0.48 8C/degree in latitude) to a gradient similar to that of today (0.6 8C/degree in latitude) took place at the end of the Miocene. The latitudinal precipitation gradient was more accentuated than today from the Mid-Miocene to the Mid-Pliocene, with higher precipitation than today in northwestern Europe and the northwestern Mediterranean but with conditions that were drier than or equivalent to today in the southwestern Mediterranean region.

Genetic diversity was analyzed in Chalcides chalcides populations from peninsular Italy, Sardinia, Sicily and Tunisia by sequencing 400 bp at the 5 0 end of the mitochondrial gene encoding cytochrome b (cyt b) and by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of two mitochondrial DNA segments (ND-1/2 and ND-3/4). The results of the phylogenetic analysis highlighted the presence of three main clades corresponding with three of the four main geographical areas (Tunisia, Sicily and the Italian peninsula), while Sardinia proved to be closely related to Tunisian haplotypes suggesting a colonization of this island from North Africa by human agency in historical times. On the contrary, the splitting times estimated on the basis of cyt b sequence data seem to indicate a more ancient colonization of Sicily and the Italian Peninsula, as a consequence of tectonic and climatic events that affected the Mediterranean Basin during the Pleistocene. Finally, the analysis of the genetic variability of C. chalcides populations showed a remarkable genetic homogeneity in Italian populations when compared to the Tunisian ones. This condition could be explained by a rapid post-glacial expansion from refugial populations that implied serial bottlenecking with progressive loss of haplotypes, resulting in a low genetic diversity in the populations inhabiting the more recently colonized areas.

New detailed pollen analysis of the lower part of the Upper Pliocene Semaforo section (Crotone, Italy) documents cyclic behavior of vegetation at the beginning of the Northern Hemisphere glaciations. The competition between four vegetation units (subtropical humid forest, deciduous temperate forest, altitudinal coniferous forest, and open xeric assemblage) probably reflects modifications of vegetation belts at this montane site. Several increases in herbaceous open vegetation regularly alternate with subtropical humid forest, which expresses rapid climatic oscillations. The complete temporal succession—deciduous forest (rich in Quercus), followed by subtropical humid forest (Taxodiaceae and Cathaya), then altitudinal coniferous forest (Tsuga, Cedrus, Abies, and Picea), and finally herbaceous open vegetation (Graminae, Compositae, and Artemisia )—displays the climatic evolution from warm and humid interglaciation to cold and dry glaciation. It also suggests an independent variation of temperature and humidity, the two main climatic parameters. The vegetation history of southern Calabria recorded in the Semaforo section have been correlated with the ∂18O signal established in the Atlantic Ocean.
