A wide range of persistent organic chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some insecticides, as well as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and some perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were analyzed in 17 bed sediments collected along the Saigon River and at adjacent canal mouths from upstream to downstream in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). Concentrations were rather low for PAHs, as well as for legacy PCBs and dichloro-diphenyl-trichlorethane and metabolites (DDTs), or below detection limits for several PFASs and all PBDEs measured. Several insecticides (chlorpyrifos-ethyl, and the pyrethroids cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin) displayed rather high concentrations at a few sites within the city. There was no distinct upstreamdownstream trend for PAHs, (DDTs) or PCBs. Although adjacent canal sediments tended to be more contaminated than Saigon River sediments, the differences were not significant. Emissions are almost certainly substantial for PAHs, and probably also for other contaminants such as PBDEs and some PFASs. During the dry season, contaminants are presumably stored in the city, either in canals or on urban surfaces. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period carries away contaminated particle flows into the canals and then the Saigon River. The strong tidal influence in the river channel hinders the accumulation of contaminated particles. Contaminated deposits should accordingly be investigated further downstream in depositional environments, such as the mangrove.

TÓM TẮTTributyl Phosphate (TBP) là một chất chống cháy phốt pho hữu cơ loại mới. Nó được sử dụng trong nhiều ngành công nghiệp, trong các sản phẩm tiêu dùng, vật liệu xây dựng hoặc đồ nội thất và cả trong nông nghiệp. TBP là một chất độc thần kinh, và có tác động làm tăng khả năng gây ung thư. Trong nghiên cứu này, sự tồn tại của TBP trong môi trường nước mặt đã được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá nguy cơ ảnh hưởng của TBP tới hệ sinh thái tại ba hồ lớn của Hà Nội (hồ Tây, hồ Bảy Mẫu và hồ Yên Sở). TBP được tìm thấy trong tất cả các mẫu nước hồ với nồng độ dao động trong khoảng từ 2,57 tới 8,93ng/L. Hồ Yên Sở có hàm lượng TBP trong nước lớn nhất. Rủi ro sinh thái đã được đánh giá cho năm loài sinh vật nước (tảo lục, tôm, bọ chét nước, cá ngựa vằn và cá vàng). Chỉ số rủi ro môi trường (RQ) đều nằm trong khoảng dưới 0,0036. Kết quả tính toán RQ cho thấy rằng, TBP không gây ra nguy cơ ảnh hưởng đáng kể nào đến các loài sinh vật được được đánh giá.Từ khóa: Chất chống cháy; TBP; nước hồ; rủi ro sinh thái; Hà Nội.

Residue concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in different kinds of samples including consumer products, indoor dust, sediment and fish collected from two e-waste recycling sites, and some industrial, urban and suburban areas in Vietnam were determined to provide a comprehensive assessment of the contamination levels, accumulation pattern, emission potential and human exposure through dust ingestion and fish consumption. There was a large variation of PBDE levels in plastic parts of obsolete electronic equipment (from 1730 to 97,300 ng/g), which is a common result observed in consumer plastic products reported elsewhere. PBDE levels in indoor dust samples collected from e-waste recycling sites ranged from 250 to 8740 ng/g, which were markedly higher than those in industrial areas and household offices. Emission rate of PBDEs from plastic parts of disposed electronic equipment to dust was estimated to be in a range from 3.4 × 10 to 1.2 × 10 (year) for total PBDEs and from 2.9 × 10 to 7.2 × 10 (year) for BDE-209. Some fish species collected from ponds in e-waste recycling villages contained elevated levels of PBDEs, especially BDE-209, which were markedly higher than those in fish previously reported. Overall, levels and patterns of PBDE accumulation in different kinds of samples suggest significant emission from e-waste sites and that these areas are potential sources of PBDE contamination. Intakes of PBDEs via fish consumption were generally higher than those estimated through dust ingestion. Intake of BDE-99 and BDE-209 through dust ingestion contributes a large proportion due to higher concentrations in dust and fish. Body weight normalized daily intake through dust ingestion estimated for the e-waste recycling sites (0.10-3.46 ng/day/kg body wt.) were in a high range as compared to those reported in other countries. Our results highlight the potential releases of PBDEs from informal recycling activities and the high degree of human exposure and suggest the need for continuous investigations on environmental pollution and toxic impacts of e-waste-related hazardous chemicals.
