“…If a duckling were reared with multiple imprinting stimuli and then was tested by the removal of various numbers of stimuli, we would be measuring the distress calls of a single bird. Since ducklings do not distress call independently of one another (Gaioni, 1982;Gaioni & Platte, 1982), one cannot equate these two measures simply by dividing the number of calls given by a subgroup by the number of birds in that subgroup. A possible solution to this problem is to rear birds in large groups and then to test them individually by placing them with smaller-sized groups of companion birds.…”

“…The maintenance of contact hypothesis may apply if the nestlings' calls are directed jointly at their parents. Antiphonal calling among two or more individuals may make them easier for another party to locate, either separately or as a group-for instance, antiphonal calling among male treefrogs appears to aid in their localization by females (Arak, 1983;Forester & Harrison, 1987;Littlejohn & Martin, 1969), and alternation of distress calls by ducklings may aid in maternal retrieval of young (Gaioni, 1982;Gaioni & Evans, 1986). Still, it seems unlikely that starling parents would need auditory cues to locate their nestlings.…”

“…The expected call overlap, under the assumption of independent calling by each bird in a pair, was obtained by multiplying the percentages of the total sequence during which each member of the pair had called. (Table 1 gives the observediexpected call overlap for each sequence, the alternation ratios of Gaioni, 1982, andLamprecht, 1985. ) Chi-square values were computed separately for each sequence, and then combined to obtain a total value for each type of exchange.…”

“…The preselection of good trackers is a routine procedure in subsequent papers using the above methods (Thorson et al 1982;Huber et al 1984;Doherty 1985a, b;Weber and Thorson (1988). Gaioni (1982) asked how natural a distress call had to be to elicit call alternation in Peking ducklings. Clicking sounds and pure tones did not release the behaviour.…”
