Dissolution and Gelation of Cellulose in TBAF/DMSO Solutions: The Roles of Fluoride Ions and Water

Abstract: Solutions of cellulose in a mixture of tetrabutylammonium fluoride and dimethyl sulfoxide (TBAF/DMSO) containing small and varying amounts of water were studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). By measuring the composition dependences of 19 F NMR and 1 H NMR chemical shifts and line widths, details on the dissolution and gelation mechanisms for cellulose in TBAF/DMSO were elucidated. Our results suggest that the strongly electronegative fluoride ions act as hydrogen bond acceptors to cellulose hydroxyl gro… Show more

“…On the contrary, polar DMSO does dissolve aliphatic hydrocarbons except for acetylene, and liquid photo solder resist (acrylate oligomer) is not been dissolved into DMSO because it is a kind of aliphatic hydrocarbon polymer (Prafulla et al 2008;Ö stlund et al 2009;Yaun et al 2010).…”

“…This question is becoming even more complicated because of a/ new nanosized polysaccharides (nanocrystals, nanofibers, aerogels), b/ new media in which fibers are "dissolved", e.g. (NaOH/urea), 31) DMSO/TBAF, 37) or ionic liquids 38), 39) and utilization of mixture of polysaccharides.…”

“…NMR and GPC but also for homogenous reactions for chemical modification of cellulose, both in labscale only. Both etherifications and esterifications have been pursued with varying success [106][107][108][109][110]. TBAF is a very hygroscopic salt and water content in DMSO/TBAF/cellulose solutions may play a crucial role, depending on circumstances.…”
