Disease Waves of SARS-CoV-2 in Iran Closely Mirror Global Pandemic Trends

Abstract: Background: Complete SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing in the early phase of the outbreak in Iran showed two independent viral entries. Subsequently, as part of a genome surveillance project, we aimed to characterize the genetic diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in Iran over one year after emerging. Methods: We provided 319 SARS-CoV-2 whole-genome sequences used to monitor circulating lineages in March 2020-May 2021 time interval. Results: The temporal dynamics of major SARS-CoV-2 clades/lineages circulating in Iran is compa… Show more

“…Babol district experienced six major waves of hospitalizations and deaths in the summer and fall compared to other provinces. In contrast to other reports from Iranian health authorities, the results of the present study also represented an increase in the total number of hospitalizations during the fifth wave, but in deaths during the first wave compared to the subsequent and later waves 11 . It is worth noting that the fifth wave was accompanied by the emergence of Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 in our region, which are more transmissible than the first wave associated with the ancestral Wuhan strain.…”

“…Several variants of SARS-CoV-2 have emerged during the pandemic, some of which have spread worldwide, while others have quickly disappeared 11 . In Iran, the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic occurred in six different waves until October 2021.…”

“…Despite the fact that Iran was one of the first and most affected countries facing the SARS-CoV-2 rapid expansion, there was no large-scale SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing data available for monitoring the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants throughout the country in the early days of the pandemic. 18 , 19 A considerable effort by the Genetics Research Center (GRC) of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences (USWR) subjected 369 SARS-CoV-2 samples from different regions of Iran to WGS from March 2020 to May 2021. 18 , 19 …”

“…Rapid emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants due to viral mutations increases its ability to escape the immune system and infect more patients, renders immunization ineffective, and affects the effectiveness of public health measures ( 5 ). In September 2020, Alpha became the dominant variant in Iran ( 6 ), which was associated with double the risk of hospitalization during 14 days of a positive molecular test in the UK and Scotland compared to previous variants ( 7 ). However, this variant predominated in Iran before starting vaccination, which made it one of the worst COVID-19 peaks so that the daily death toll exceeded 700.…”
