Discrepancy in current central serous chorioretinopathy classification

Abstract: The high discordance among experienced retina specialists in describing CSCR clinical subtypes is highlighted. The current work demonstrates the limitations of current empirical CSCR classification methods and the need for a more objective and refined system to bring uniformity in diagnosis and prognostication of the disease.

“…Even so, temporal and phenotype criteria (structural changes) are currently the only universally accepted criteria for classifying and distinguishing CSC. However, overlapping discrepancies and terminologies are excessive even among experts, and this creates a strong limitation in the development of management strategies [32,33]. Singh et al [33] conducted a multicenter survey with multimodal images of 100 acute and chronic CSC cases.…”

“…Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is primarily an ocular disease, affecting the choroid and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Different forms of the disease are recognized although a consensus nomenclature is still missing 1 . Most of the patients present with a focal RPE leak that causes a spontaneously resolving, and sometimes recurrent serous detachment.…”

“…Using ICGA, the extent of underlying choroidal abnormalities can be assessed. Based on the findings on multimodal imaging and the duration of symptoms, CSC is often categorized into acute CSC and chronic CSC (cCSC), although the classification is subject of debate [4]. While acute CSC usually resolves spontaneously within 4 months after the start of symptoms, cCSC can lead to irreversible visual impairment and a decreased quality of life [5,6].…”
