Discovery of face-centred cubic Os nanoparticles

Abstract: The first example of the crystal structure control of Os is reported. The fcc-structured Os nanoparticles were synthesized using an Os acetylacetonate complex as a precursor although the fcc structure does not exist in the bulk state.

“…Very recently, our group also succeeded in synthesizing novel fcc-Os by adopting the same strategy as in the fcc-Ru case. [69] The formation of the fcc phase in Ru was realized by the stabilization of an fcc (111) facet with the strong adsorption of acetylacetone on the facet because of matching the atomic distance of O-O in acetylacetone with that of Ru-Ru in fcc (111). Since the bond length of the nearest-neighbor Os-Os (ca.…”

“…However, only a few of them are selectively synthesized. To clarify the mechanism of phase control in monometallic nanomaterials, we mainly focus on well‐studied systems including fcc‐Ru, [60] fcc‐Os, [69] hexagonal 2H‐Pd, [84] and 2H‐ [78] and 4H‐Au [79] nanometals. The crystal phase effect on their applications is also introduced.…”

“…Quite recently, some monometallic NPs were found to show an unusual crystal structure that is unobtainable in their bulk states . For example, hcp‐Au nanosheets, fcc‐Ru NPs, fcc‐Os NPs, and hcp‐Rh nanosheets are prepared by using wet chemistry methods at ambient conditions. However, controlling the crystal structure of an alloy system is still challenging, even at the nanoscale.…”
