Abstract: A pterosaur bone bed with at least 47 individuals (wing spans: 0.65–2.35 m) of a new species is reported from southern Brazil from an interdunal lake deposit of a Cretaceous desert, shedding new light on several biological aspects of those flying reptiles. The material represents a new pterosaur, Caiuajara dobruskii gen. et sp. nov., that is the southermost occurrence of the edentulous clade Tapejaridae (Tapejarinae, Pterodactyloidea) recovered so far. Caiuajara dobruskii differs from all other members of this… Show more

“…1 and 2). Additionally, although size is often used as a proxy for degree of skeletal maturity in many studies (20,24,(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41), size correlates poorly with morphological maturity, as quantified by maturity score in OSA, even though OSA may reconstruct missing data as present and thus raise the maturity score higher than a strict scoring of the individual would give (Figs. 1 and 2).…”

“…This last notion was recently supported by the exceptional discovery of the tapejarin tapejarid Caiuajara dobruskii in the southern part of Brazil, represented by dozens of individuals of different ontogenetic stages and potentially different sexes. It could be determined that right from a very early ontogenetic stage, this pterosaur bore a cranial crest (Manzig et al 2014).…”

“…Despite the heated debate on this topic (e.g., Hone et al 2012, Knell et al 2013a, b, Padian and Horner 2013 the fact is that sexual dimorphism (and several other biological questions) are difficult to be tested without a large number of individuals that belong to the same or closely related populations (Kellner et al 2013), what has only rarely been the case for pterosaurs (Grellet-Tinner et al 2014, Manzig et al 2014, Wang et al 2014a.…”

“…Além da contribuição brasileira ao estudo dos pterossauros a partir de descobertas realizadas no próprio país, que incluem o achado de uma rara concentração de centenas de indivíduos (a mais numerosa já documentada) de uma espécie tida como frugívora em rochas que representam um oásis dentre um paleodeserto (27), vale a pena destacar que muitas das pesquisas de destaque envolvendo material encontrado na China têm participação de paleontólogos brasileiros (p. ex., 24, 26).…”
