The coronavirus pandemic dominated headlines at the same time that mainstream news organizations began adding more podcasts to their digital storytelling platforms. This popular form of audio journalism appears to be unrestricted by traditional journalism practices and constraints of deadlines and space. Few academic studies thus far have examined the characteristics of news podcasts (i.e., shows created by professional news organizations) and where they fit within the journalism landscape. Through a content analysis of 40 news podcast episodes related to the coronavirus pandemic, this study explores the extent to which narrative storytelling devices (voice, character development, scene setting, dialogue, dramatic tension), and other elements, such as opinion, were incorporated into the sample. Results show all but one episode utilized narrative storytelling elements, but the degree of editing and production varied widely. Results also demonstrate an overall shift away from journalistic norms of objectivity and toward interpretive reporting in this emerging format. Reporters and hosts often appear as both characters and experts in the episodes, and narrative elements serve to emphasize storytelling over content.

Este artigo tem o objetivo de analisar como são conformados os conteúdos editoriais produzidos para as múltiplas plataformas de redes sociais pelos jornais nativos digitais Nexo, do Brasil, e Vox, dos Estados Unidos. De caráter descritivo-analítico, a pesquisa combina técnicas qualitativas e quantitativas. O estudo foca nos conceitos de propagabilidade (JENKINS et al., 2014) e de dispositivo (MOUILLAUD, 1997) e se dá a partir de postagens dos perfis dos dois veículos no Facebook, no Twitter, no YouTube e no Instagram. A descrição e a análise são realizadas por meio de categorias relacionadas ao referencial teórico e ao objeto empírico (temporalidade, autoria, links, modalidades e interação). Verifica-se que cada uma das categorias se relaciona com as possibilidades que o dispositivo oferece e com as estratégias de propagabilidade de cada jornal. Percebe-se a constante interação entre os dispositivos “jornal” e “plataforma de rede social”, conformando os conteúdos editoriais.

This study analyzes the behind-the-scenes correspondence, from 1928 to 1941, between the New York Times' news executives and editors and John W. White, who served as the paper's first Chief South American Correspondent. An analysis of the correspondence and White's dispatches shows that interactions between news management, foreign governments, and the U.S. State Department influenced White's writing to the point that he avoided writing about Argentina's neighbors; provided more positive, "Pollyanna" material; and censored his own dispatches. The study provides further evidence that Arthur Hays Sulzberger meddled in the paper's news coverage, even before he became Times publisher in 1935. The correspondence between Sulzberger and White also calls into question the romantic myth of the autonomous foreign correspondent, free to report without fear or favor. Instead, it shows that American foreign correspondents faced scrutiny not only from their news executives and editors but also from foreign governments, police officials, local newspapers, Nazi and Fascist spies, U.S. business interests, the State Department, and even the President of the United States.
