Abstract: A cation hydration study of diamagnetic Lu3+, paramagnetic Er3+ and Yb3+, and, in a preliminary manner, paramagnetic Pr3+, Nd3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, and Tm3+ has been carried out by a low-temperature, direct pmr technique. At temperatures ranging from -60' (Dy3+ and Tm3+) to -120" (Pr3+), proton and ligand exchange are slow enough to permit the observation of separate signals for bulk and coordinated water molecules.
