Abstract: Direct measurements and modelling of neutral gas heating in a radio-frequency (13.56 MHz) electrothermal collisional plasma micro-thruster have been performed using rovibrational band matching of the second positive system of molecular nitrogen (N2) for operating pressures of 4.5 Torr down to 0.5 Torr. The temperature measured with decreasing pressure for 10 W power input ranged from 395 K to 530 K in pure N2 and from 834 K to 1090 K in argon with 1% N2. A simple analytical model was developed which describes … Show more

“…The experimental setup used here to capture temporal evolution of neutral gas temperature is the same as previously described [6,13], with a 4 mm diameter optic fiber used in conjunction with a monochromator to direct discharge photons onto a charge coupled device (CCD) array. Spectral resolution is 0.02 nm, which is sufficient to resolve the band head and tail region of the N 2 second positive system bands.…”

“…Simulated spectra are iteratively fitted to the experimental data to extract both vibrational temperature (T v ) and rotational temperature(T r ) using the same method as previously fully outlined in Greig et al [6]. At pressures of a few Torr, the collision frequency is sufficiently high to assume that the rotational and translational temperatures are in thermal equilibrium [15][16][17].…”

“…Over the past decade, neutral-gas heating has been experimentally studied both in low-pressure high-power (with and without an applied magnetic field) radiofrequency (rf) discharges [1] and in high-pressure low-power rf discharges [2]. When neutral pressure varies along the axis or across a radius, ionization and transport become coupled and this greatly affects the plasma steady-state [3].…”

“…To date it is extremely difficult to obtain actual thrust balance measurements of microthrusters in general. The recently developed Pocket Rocket concept is essentially an instant "on" radio frequency plasma heated gas thruster [2].…”
