Direct Comparison of the Different Conventional Laparoscopic Positions with the Ethos Surgical Platform in a Laparoscopic Pelvic Surgery Simulation Setting

Abstract: The new operating platform (ETHOS chair) can significantly improve ergonomics in laparoscopy particularly concerning difficult steps like intracorporeal suturing. This may also improve the urethrovesical anastomosis times in a clinical setting.

“…Despite the shorter WIT, postoperative renal function did not differ between the groups. The impact of ETHOS on surgeons’ physical ergonomics has been studied extensively previously, showing a significant reduction of the mean complaint score from 31.6 (20–40) to 13.9 (13–24), mainly as a result of less shoulder stiffness, arm pain, hand pain, wrist stiffness, back and leg pain .…”

“…. In a study published in 2015 comparing the ergonomics of standard lapa rosopy with laparoscopy using the secondgeneration ETHOS™ chair or using the da Vinci® system, the use of the ETHOS™ chair improved ergo nomics significantly: surgeon's muscle pain score (including neck pain, shoul der pain, wrist pain, and back pain) was 32 for standard laparoscopy versus 16 for the use of ETHOS™ versus 4 for the da Vinci® system (P <0.05) 59 . The ETHOS™ chair can also be used for laparoscopic or retroperito neoscopic surgery, particularly during reconstruction in partial nephrectomy or pyeloplasty.…”
