Direct Analysis of Biological Tissue by Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: Paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) is explored as a fast and convenient way for direct analysis of molecules in tissues with minimum sample pretreatment. This technique allows direct detection of different types of molecules such as hormones, lipids and therapeutic drugs in short total analysis times (less than one minute) using a small volume of tissue sample (typically 1 mm 3 or less). The tissue sample could be obtained by needle aspiration biopsy, by punch biopsy, or by rubbing a thin tissue section acr… Show more

“…Some noncapillary tips such as stainless steel needle [6,19], paper [13,[20][21][22][23], and wooden tips [14] enabled direct analysis of raw samples. Hiraoka and co-workers reported the sequential and exhaustive ionization of analytes on solid metal probe [24].…”

“…Other applications include analysis of agrochemicals and contaminants in food [15][16][17], tissue analysis [18], surface swabbing [19,20], profiling of algae [21] and bacteria [22,23], cell culture monitoring [24], and herbicides [25] in water and crop extracts. In addition to applications development, methodological advancements have been reported for paper spray MS such as improving selectivity using differential mobility spectrometry prior to MS detection [26], improving sensitivity using solid phase extraction [27], the use of alternative porous substrates [7,[28][29][30], and using paper spray as an ionization source for microfluidics chips [31,32].…”
