Diptera of forensic importance in the Iberian Peninsula: larval identification key

Abstract: A revision of the species and families of sarcosaprophagous flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae, Fanniidae, Drosophilidae, Phoridae, Piophilidae and Stratiomyidae) suitable for forensic purposes in the Iberian Peninsula is presented. Morphological characteristics that allow the accurate identification of third instars of the species present in the Iberian Peninsula are described and presented in the form of a diagnostic key. For larval Calliphoridae, characteristics such as the spines of the… Show more

“…Some characters need to be confirmed in genera Arctopiophila Duda, Parapiophila McAlpine and Protopiophila Duda; moreover, the considerations of Ozerov (2004) on the classification and validity of genera Arctopiophila and Parapiophila must be taken into account. For a general larval identification key to sarcosaprophagous Diptera families including Piophilidae see Velásquez et al (2010). As mentioned, the larvae of most of the piophilid species remain undescribed and the scarce published descriptions are dispersed in the scientific literature, needing a compilation and updating.…”

“…Identification is made with stereomicroscopes coupled with video and an imagery acquisition chain using dichotomous keys described by Szpila (2010Szpila ( , 2012 [8] [9] and Velasequez et al (2010) [10]. Species identification is confirmed at least three times.…”

“…De los adultos, el muerto fue directamente conservado en alcohol al 70% y el otro sacrificado con acetato de etilo y posteriormente conservado con el mismo método que la muestra que se remitió muerta. La totalidad de las muestras fueron identificadas a nivel de especie 14,15 . No se recogieron muestras entomológicas durante el levantamiento del cadáver.…”
