Show more

“…It must be emphasized that the experimental diet conditions in this work and in the work of Lazzarini (2007) were atypical, where NDF from low-quality forage was basically the only source of carbohydrates for microbial growth, with non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC) intake below metabolic fecal excretion (Lazzarini, 2007;Sampaio et al, 2009). …”

“…However, recent studies, e.g., Lazzarini et al (2009), suggest that CP content below 8% limit fiber degradation in the rumen due to the reduction of cellulolytic bacteria. The increase in NDF and ADF contents might be a consequence of the reduction in NCE, and the high flowering rate of the grass, owing likely to the reduction in metabolism of the grass in an attempt to extend its lifetime.…”

“…Table 3 -average intake of pasture and supplement nutrients and digestibility of DM and NDFacp weight gain (17.6 kg) higher than the non-supplemented animals (6.9 kg) (Table 4). According to Lazzarini (2007), dietary levels of crude protein above 8.55% provide sufficient microbial growth that do not harm the digestibility of potentially degradable neutral detergent fiber. As the close value of crude protein showed by B. decumbens (8.31%) in this work, there was no significant differences (P>0.10) in NDFacp digestibility for supplemented animals in comparison to non-supplemented animals (Table 3).…”
