The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of dysphoria/depressive symptoms in mothers of autistic children and to identify correlations between quality of life and sociodemographic profile. An exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out, involving 20 mothers, by applying a socio-demographic profile questionnaire, the Brazilian version of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the WHOQOL-Bref quality of life scale. Dysphoria/depression criteria were found in 15% of the mothers. Overall quality of life was evaluated as positive in 70%, however only 40% were satisfied with their health. The Physical domain (mean=69.4) was perceived as the best, and environment domain as the worst (mean=60.8). Quality of life had a positive association with family income and level of education, and a negative association with depression. Considering the results, further research, especially on those variables that were not statistically relevant, is suggested. Depresión y calidad de vida en madres de niños con trastornos invasores de desarrolloEl objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la prevalencia de disforia/síntomas depresivos en madres de niños con trastorno autístico e identificar posibles relaciones con calidad de vida y características sociodemográficas. Se trata de estudio exploratorio, descriptivo y transversal, conducido con 20 madres, por medio de la aplicación de cuestionario del perfil sociodemográfico y de la versión brasileña del Inventario de Depresión de Beck (BDI) y de la forma abreviada de la Escala de Calidad de Vida WHOQOL-Bref.Los resultados mostraron que 15% de las madres llenaron los criterios para disforia/ depresión; 70% evaluaron favorablemente su calidad de vida global, sin embargo, apenas 40% de ellas estaban "satisfechas" con su salud. El dominio físico (promedio=69,4) fue el mejor apreciado y el peor fue el ambiental (promedio=60,8). La calidad de vida se asoció positivamente con la renta familiar y el nivel de instrucción y, negativamente, con la depresión. Considerándose los resultados obtenidos, se sugiere que sean realizados nuevos estudios que profundicen, especialmente, las variables que no se mostraron significativas.

Este estudo clínico-qualitativo investigou o impacto da deficiência intelectual moderada na dinâmica e na qualidade de vida familiar. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas individuais com 15 mães de deficientes, escolhidas por conveniência, e examinados pela técnica de análise de conteúdo categorial temática. Os resultados foram discutidos usando-se abordagem compreensiva e interpretativa. Da análise das entrevistas apreendeu-se que o cuidado do filho deficiente é centrado na mãe, o que contribuiu para a modificação das relações familiares. O enfrentamento religioso apareceu como estratégia comum de ajuste. Os filhos deficientes tiveram acesso a menos serviços e suportes do que necessitavam, nas áreas de saúde, educação e lazer. Restrições financeiras e dificuldades no convívio comunitário impactaram negativamente na qualidade de vida familiar. Apoio emocional e psicológico para todos os membros da família, e apoio prático e social, incluindo distribuição de renda e acesso a serviços adequados, mostraram-se essenciais para o bem-estar do deficiente e de sua família.

-Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of pharmacotherapy on the symptoms of psychomotor agitation and aggressive behavior in a sample of patients with autistic spectrum disorder. Method: The charts of all patients with a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder, receiving care for psychomotor agitation and/or aggressive behavior in two psychiatric outpatient departments between 2001 and 2006, were reviewed. The Clinical Global Impression-Severity and -Improvement scales (CGI-S and CGI-I) were applied to the data retrieved from the charts. Results: The majority of the 26 patients included were treated with second-generation antipsychotics. A positive, statistically significant correlation was found between the implementation of pharmacotherapy and a reduction in CGI-S scores (p<0.05). Treatment response in patients with no mental retardation was better than in those mentally retarded (p<0.05). The majority of patients in whom clinical improvement was found following implementation of treatment had participated in at least one form of intervention therapy in addition to the principal treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: Secondgeneration antipsychotics seem to reduce psychomotor agitation and aggressive behavior in patients with autistic spectrum disorder; however, further studies are required to evaluate the side effects of these drugs in relation to their beneficial effects.Key wordS: antipsychotics, pharmacological, retrospective, autistic disorder, treatment. Controle da agitação psicomotora e agressividade em pacientes com autismo: estudo retrospectivo de revisão de prontuárioResumo -Objetivo: Avaliar a eficácia do tratamento farmacológico dos sintomas de agitação psicomotora e agressividade em amostra de pacientes com transtorno do espectro autista. Método: Foram revisados os prontuários de pacientes com diagnóstico de transtorno do espectro autista que procuraram atendimento por apresentarem agitação psicomotora e/ou heteroagressividade, atendidos entre 2001 e 2006, em dois ambulatórios de psiquiatria. Para avaliação da evolução dos pacientes aplicou-se às informações do prontuário a escala de Impressão Clínica Global Sintomas (ICG-S) e a Impressão Clínica Global Melhora (ICG-M). Resultados: A maioria dos 26 pacientes estava em tratamento com antipsicóticos de segunda geração. Houve correlação positiva e estatisticamente significativa entre a introdução do tratamento farmacológico e a redução nos escores da ICG-S (p<0,05). A evolução do tratamento farmacológico foi melhor para os pacientes sem retardo mental do que para aqueles com retardo mental (p<0,05). A maioria dos pacientes que obteve melhora clínica com o tratamento participava de ao menos uma intervenção auxiliar ao tratamento principal (p<0,05). Conclusão: os antipsicóticos de segunda geração parecem reduzir a agitação psicomotora e agressividade em pacientes com transtorno do espectro autista no Brasil. É necessário que se avaliem os efeitos colaterais em relação aos efeitos benéficos dessas drogas.
