Dina serbica, a new species of leeches (Annelida: Hirudinea: Erpobdellidae) from Serbia, based on morphological and molecular evidence

Abstract: In the present study we used an integrative taxonomic approach that combines morphological and DNA barcoding data to describe a new species, Dina serbica sp. nov. from a spring in western Serbia. The average K2P-distance between DNA-barcode sequences of D. serbica sp. nov. and its closest relative D. minuoculata was estimated at 11.96±1.39%. Moreover, the ASAP (assemble species by automatic partitioning) species-delimitation method based on COI sequences from our study and sequences of Dina species from GenBan… Show more

“…Cocoons of Dina lineata (O. F. Müller, 1774) are "lemon-shaped" (Sládeček and Košel, 1984;Elliott and Dobson, 2015), while those of D. sketi are more or less oval -"kiwi-shaped". Based on the only published photo in Pešić and Grosser (2022), the cocoon of Dina serbica Pešić & Grosser, 2022 from Serbia seem to have a similar shape. The collected cocoons were in different stages of maturity, which will not be analyzed and discussed in this paper.…”

“…Moreover, there is still no consensus on the genera within Erpobdellidae. The idea of synonymizing most genera (Croatobranchus, Dina, Nephelopsis, Mooreobdella, Motobdella, and Trocheta) meets with more and more supporters from North America [14,26,31,33,34], and at the same time, opponents of the abolition of at least Eurasian Dina and Trocheta [25,28,32,[35][36][37].…”
