Abstract: Dimorphandra wilsonii Rizzini is a rare species. Although cited as endemic to the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, it has been recorded only for the municipalities of Paraopeba and Caetanópolis and therefore has not been extensively studied. This long-term, intensive survey, conducted from 2004 to 2012 in the central region of the state, was aimed at assessing its distribution, describing its habitat, and verifying its endemism, as well as assessing threats and determining its conservation status. Given the co… Show more

“…Dimorphandra wilsonii seeds collected in areas of natural occurrence in 2015 in Minas Gerais State, Brazil [18] were acquired from the Botanical Garden of the Zoo-Botanical Foundation (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil); the seeds were used immediately after harvesting. The seeds were mechanically scarified and then surface-sterilized in 5% sodium hypochlorite for 5 min and thoroughly rinsed with deionized water before sowing.…”

“…Dimorphandra wilsonii Rizzini (Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae) is a threatened plant species native to the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) [15] that is included in the Red List of Threatened Species [16]. Populations of this species have been drastically declining because of habitat losses [17,18]-mainly related to agriculture, pasture formation, and mining-which are also responsible for large environmental inputs of trace elements. Increased Zn concentrations in Cerrado soils as a result of human activities [19,20] have been accompanied by temperature changes over past centuries.…”

“…wilsonii was significantly raised by the continuation of the searches for the remaining plants (now the count is of 219 mature individuals occurring in nature) and area of distribution is larger than previously though (now 16 municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais are known to harbor this endangered plant). Additionally the plant is being progressively re-introduced in areas where it occurred in the past and a National Action Plan for its protection has been recently published [ 12 ]. There is hope that the actions included in the plan will eventually result in the long-term preservation of this tree species and as a consequence the preservation of its specialized mycobiota.…”

“…Existing information on the localities of the occurrence of D . wilsonii individuals in nature were provided by F. Fernandes based on his regular surveys for remaining individuals of this species that started in 2003 [ 12 ]. Whenever individuals belonging to the closely related species D .…”

“…Deforestation and fragmentation in Cerrado is more recent, but has occurred in high rates; from 1970 to 2005 about 50% of the biome land cover was transformed into pasture and agricultural land 25 . Dimorphandra exaltata has a distribution partially sympatric with that of the critically endangered species D. wilsonii 26 . These areas have been highly disturbed by anthropogenic activities, mainly agriculture and urbanization 27 .
