Dilute stuffing in the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7

Abstract: The pyrochlore Eu2Ir2O7 has recently attracted significant attention as a candidate Weyl semimetal. The previous reports on this compound unanimously show a thermally induced metal to insulator (MI) transition, concomitant with antiferromagnetic (AFM) long-range ordering of the Ir-moments below TN ∼120 K. However, there are contradictory reports concerning the slope dρ/dT of the resistivity plots (ρ) in the "metallic" state above the metal-insulator (MI) transition, and the value of ρ in the insulating state, … Show more

“…Bragg peaks were slightly asymmetric, indicative of a distribution of strains in the bulk which is commonly observed for pyrochlore samples. 24 In the pyrochlore structure there are four sites A 2 B 2 O 6 O , which are located at the 16d, 16c, 48f , and 8b Wyckoff positions respectively. The cubic lattice constant a decreases with Ca substitution (Table I) in accordance with Vegard's law, as expected since 8-coordinate Ca 2+ ionic radii are nearly 1% smaller than Nd 3+ .…”

“…The details of synthesis protocol are similar to that given in Ref. [20]. The lattice parameters were obtained using the Rietveld refinement done on very high-resolution synchrotron data (MCX at ELETTRA).…”

“…We note that in the pyrochlore literature the reverse of this defect (occupation of the B-site by the A-site ion) is referred to as "stuffing" and has been studied extensively (see, for example, [33,34,41]). The situation here, termed "negative" stuffing, has been the subject of considerably fewer studies [45][46][47].…”
