Diffusion-weighted MR imaging of normal and abnormal scrotum: preliminary results

Abstract: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the scrotum represents an important supplemental diagnostic tool in the evaluation of scrotal diseases. Diffusion-weighted (DW) MR imaging is a developing technique, proved to improve tissue characterization. We evaluated the feasibility and diagnostic performance of DW MR imaging in the detection and characterization of scrotal lesions. We retrospectively evaluated 31 scrotal lesions (23 intratesticular and 8 extratesticular) in 26 men. All MR examinations were performed on … Show more

“…Diffusion restriction may be observed as a result of inflammation, trauma, ischemia, tumor or fibrosis [7,9]. Investigating the ADC values is a promising radiological method in determining testicular fibrosis in patients with varicocele [3,10]. To our knowledge, there is only one study in the literature on the testis diffusion in patients with varicocele, and in that study, the testicular ADC values of patients with varicocele and healthy volunteers were found to be different [3].…”

“…A few recently published reports have addressed the diagnostic performance of DWI in the evaluation of various scrotal pathologies such as detection and localization of impalpable testes, diagnosis of testicular torsion and differentiation between normal, benign and malignant scrotal contents (9,(18)(19)(20).…”

“…Magnetic Resonance (MR) of the testis, by means of classic T1 and T2 weighted sequences, is the second level choice to study the parenchymal pattern, the vascularization and for the morphovolumetric characterization [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
