“…Previous studies looking at di#erential expression of MHC class II genes in fish have shown varying levels of transcription in di#erent tissues and cells (Rodrigues et al, 1995;Koppang et al, 1998). Studies of the ontogeny of MHC class II expression in carp Cyprinus carpio, using RNA extracted from whole embryos, have shown that transcription increases with time (Rodrigues et al, in press).…”

“…We found a significant increase in C5aR expression in fish at 25°C, which supports the notion of an increased level of this arm of the immune system at higher temperatures. MHC class II receptors are expressed on the surface of antigen-presenting cells (Nath et al 2006), and increased expression of MHC II in the spleen and gills has been recorded after vaccination of salmon (Koppang et al 1998). However, we could not detect changes of MHC II expression in spleen and head kidney following immunization.…”

“…40 However, previous investigations have shown that there is a retinal reaction to various cytokines and LPS in mammals, and that MHC class II expression may be induced in the Atlantic salmon after vaccination. 24 Because the retinal function is of vital importance to the animal, actions are taken to limit inflammatory responses as effectively as possible. 39 This is the probable explanation for the lack of MHC class II retinal induction in the present material.…”

“…Expression experiments showed that transcriptional regulatory mechanisms appeared similar to those in mammals. 22,24 The production of antisera recognizing the ␤ chain allowed us to investigate several tissues using immunohistochemic methods, and we suggested a similar distribution of MHC class II ϩ cells as that seen in mammals. 23 Fish possess camera-type eyes, similar to their mammalian counterparts.…”
