Differentiation between pine woods according to species and growing location using FTIR-ATR

Abstract: Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy was applied to 120 samples of heartwood rings from eight individual pine trees from different locations in Spain. Pinus sylvestris cores were collected at the Artikutza natural park (Ps-ART). Pinus nigra cores were collected in Sierra de Cazorla (Pn-LIN) and in La Sagra Mountain (Pn-LSA). Three discriminant analysis tests were performed using all bands (DFT), lignin bands only (DFL) and polysaccharides bands only (DFP), to explore … Show more

“…The resolved IR spectrum for component III shows a distinct, broad band at 1700-1736 cm -1 and is assumed to be formed by the overlapping of the C = O stretch vibration of acetyl or carboxylic acid (COOH) groups (Faix, 1991;Schwanninger et al, 2004) and the C = O stretch vibration of unconjugated ketones, carbonyls, and esters groups. This broader band centered at 1728 cm -1 could suggest the presence of resin acids in the rays since C = O stretching belonging to the -COOH group absorb around 1700 cm -1 (Traoré et al, 2018). Besides, bands are observed around 1600, 1637, and 1660 cm -1 ; the same ones as found in components IV and V, but weaker.…”

“…And integration with other techniques recently tested for dendroprovenancing, e.g. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Traore, Kaal, & Cortizas, ), seems to broaden this potential.…”

“…Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py–GC–MS) are the two analytical techniques applied for wood chemical characterization in this article. More details about the analytical techniques can be found in [2] and [3] .Wood cores were retrieved at breast height using an increment borer in different sampling sites. Furthermore, wood fragments were collected from a series of shipwrecks with Iberian shipbuilding features.…”

“…In order to increase the consistency of the discriminant models (for species differentiation), additional spectra from individual rings belonging to the heartwood of living trees wood cores (“extended heartwood dataset”) were recorded. Quality assessment of the FTIR and Py–GC–MS were evaluated according to protocols provided in earlier publications [2] , [3] . FTIR measurements were performed throughout the wood cores at 1 cm intervals.…”
