Abstract: This paper adds to the current debate on why it is important for nurse researchers to clearly understand phenomenology as a philosophy and research method before embarking on a study. The paper guides novice researchers on key methodological decisions they need to make when using descriptive or interpretive phenomenological research approaches.

“…In describing the nature of the phenomenon, descriptive phenomenology does not bring in external theory or interpretation (Finlay, 2011), neither does it seek to generate theories based on theoretical processes (Creswell, 2014). Descriptive phenomenology engages in phenomenological epoche, whereby the researcher brackets existing knowledge about the phenomenon so as to capture the participants' lived experience (A. P. Giorgi & Giorgi, 2003;Matua & Van Der Wal, 2015).…”

“…The process of unveiling structures or essences of human consciousness is what phenomenology seeks to achieve. It is both a philosophy (science) and a research methodology that guides exploration and description of the appearance of things in people's minds (Matua &Van Der Wal, 2015). It provides a gateway for understanding someone's experience of a range of phenomena (Creswell, 2007;Daly, 2007;Liamputtong, 2009).…”

“…In Husserlian phenomenology, the researcher can recruit at least three participants in order to come up with variations and descriptions of the structures of the phenomenon (Finlay, 2011;Matua & Van Der Wal, 2015). During the data collection and analysis, the researcher is expected to conduct bracketing or phenomenological reduction and consider the participants' experiences in their pure form by allowing the texts or data to describe itself and not based on what the researcher understood of the meanings of texts (Finlay, 2011;Matua & Van Der Wal, 2015).…”

“…Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis is an appropriate research methodology for this study because it is commonly used among researchers in the field of humanities, human sciences and arts (Matua & Van Der Wal, 2015;Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009). It is also an appropriate strategy because the purpose of this study is to understand how students of color make meaning of their experience of "being in" a PWI and understand their interaction with white student affairs professionals.…”
