“…The increased resistance to osmotic lysis of spheroplasts from cells grown at 15 C rather than 30 C, as the test temperature was lowered below 30 C, could be explained by the small increase in the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in the spheroplast membranes from cells grown at the lower temperature. The presence of an increased proportion of unsaturation in lipids lowers the temperature at which the endothermic phase transition takes place (4,5,6).
