“…However, in healthy women, no β‐cell dysfunction is observed as a consequence of excessive androgens stimulation . Androgens administration in women seem not dangerous, and favourable effects on body composition have been reported , suggesting that an androgen therapy can be safely used also in women.…”

“…Topically applied androgen is capable of reducing total body weight and abdominal fat accumulation in postmenopausal women [Gruber et al, 1998]. Women treated with androgen and estrogen co‐therapy, compared with estrogen treatment alone, showed increased total lean body mass and a reduction in the percentage fat for all tissues examined [Dobs et al, 2002; Floter et al, 2005]. Furthermore, low‐dose treatment improves functional capacity, insulin resistance, and muscle strength in women (as in men) with chronic heart failure [Iellamo et al, 2010].…”

“…Dose‐dependent improvements in several domains of sexual function, lean body mass, chest‐press power and loaded stair‐climb power were observed, with the greatest improvements at the highest dose. Furthermore, a double‐blind randomized study by Dobs and colleagues, with 40 naturally and surgically menopausal women, observed significant increases in upper and lower body strength with testosterone compared to placebo . Whilst the majority of studies observed testosterone significantly increased sexual arousal/interest, frequency of orgasms and frequency of sexual activity when compared to placebo, some suggest no significant difference between the treatment groups .…”
