“…One of our strains, 03-1816, also showed a prolonged expression of luk-PV into the post-exponential phase. Overall, the time-course and the level of luk-PV expression seem to vary considerably between different S. aureus strains, as was also shown by other groups (Hamilton et al, 2007;Said-Salim et al, 2005). Strains MW2 and USA300 in particular differed in the level of PVL expression.…”

“…The pvl, icaA, icaD, IS256, agr, bap, and fnbB genes were assessed with endpoint PCR according to methods described by Saïd-Salim et al (5) , Martin-Lopez et al (6) , Arciola et al (7) , Gu et al (8) , Shopsin et al (9) , Cucarella et al (10) and Tristan et al (11) . The oligonucleotide primers described previously by Kondo et al (12) were used for verifying the various types of SCCmec elements.…”

“…The presence in the lungs causes hemorrhage, extensive necrosis of alveolar septa, destruction of the epithelium covering the bronchi and bronchioles (Zhang et al, 2005), and histological sections show necrotic lesions in the mucosa of the trachea (Lina et al, 1999). Due to these facts, studies have proposed that the propensity of CA-MRSA infections cause severe skin and soft tissue lesions, and possibly necrotizing pneumonia, is due to the presence of the gene encoding the production of PVL (Saïd-Salim et al 2005). …”

“…The acquisition of genes encoding PVL is made by transduction of a specific type of bacteriophage, phiSLT, which causes cytolysis in carrier gene cells and transport this gene to another cell. From its transcription two exoproteins , the Luks-PV and LukF-PV are produced, acting through the synergistic action of both subunits (Melles et al, 2006, Saïd-Salim et al, 2005. When secreted, LukS-PV initiates a connection to the membrane of the polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) and is dimerized with LukF-PV, alternating one and another until the complete formation of a heptamer.…”
